Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, commonly known as Florida A&M University or FAMU is a university located in Tallahassee FL. FAMU was founded on October 3, 1887, and began with only 15 students and 2 instructors. The university sits on the highest hill in Florida's capital city of Tallahassee. The original school was housed in a single building on Copeland Street and offered instruction in 3 areas. During the 1890’s the school relocated to its present location and its name was changed to the State Normal & Industrial College for Colored Students. Another name changed occurred in 1909 when the school became known as Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College for Negroes, and in 1 year later the school held a body count numbering just over 300. During the years 1950-1968, the University experienced its most rapid growth. Twenty-three buildings were constructed and renovated with costs totaling more than $14 million. FAMU achieved a significant first by becoming the first Negro institution to become a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Enrollment grew to more than 3,500, and the number of faculty increased by more than 500. Today FAMU's main campus comprises 156 buildings spread over 422 acres atop the highest of Tallahassee’s seven hills.Florida A&M University enrolls nearly 11,000 students from the United States and more than 70 countries such as India, Egypt, Trinidad, Netherlands, China, Bahamas, Jamaica, and Brazil. Florida A&M University’s school colors were selected because of the green from agricultural plants and the orange from Florida’s citrus industry.
