“Welcome to Byeol café! How may I help you?” Naeun was greeted with the short-haired waitress as soon as she stepped into the café. She smiled warmly at the waitress,
“Can we-“
“A table for two, please.” Saeeun cut her off before she could finish her sentence. The waitress nod professionally at the two of them, “Please follow me.”
As soon as they reached their table, Saeeun put down all her belongings and took off her Scarlet coat, placing it on her chair. “What do you want? Americano, the usual?”
Naeun replied with a small smile, “I want Macchiato this time.”
“Didn’t you say milk makes you want to vomit? You’re making yourself sick if you drink Macchiato,” Saeeun groaned, crossing her arms in front of her chest.
“Just this once, Saeeun,” Naeun looked at her lovingly. Saeeun flailed her arms in the air, “Fine, fine. Just don’t blame me if you get sick.” Naeun chuckled seeing Saeeun’s actions, “I won’t. I just want it for old time’s sake.”

Naeun excitedly browsed through the internet, clicking on the links and searched for some more. In two months’ time, she is moving to Japan. Yes, Japan, the country she thought she can only visit in her dreams. It’s no secret that she loved Japanese culture, or more specifically Japanese boybands with their attractive members.

When the letter of scholarship acceptance from Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku arrived at her house yesterday morning, Naeun knew it was fate for her to live and find the love of her life there.

Naeun read through all the websites of her potential future home in Japan. Not even one of them came close to what she was searching for, though. The rooms that are being rented are either one, were located in a strategic area but too expensive for her parents to handle, or two, were affordable but were located in an indecent area.

After spending two hours browsing through the internet and not finding the one she needed, Naeun felt her eyes becoming heavier and heavier. Just

Jeanne Wakatsuki was a seven year old girl who survived The Bombing of Pearl Harbor. She was a normal young girl. She liked to watch the boats dock and go to school. However, one thing was missing in her life: her identity. She was a Japanese girl who didn’t embrace her culture. After 7 years of a normal life, Jeanne was forced to move to a Japanese ghetto on Terminal Island in Hawaii. She felt so out of place from what I could tell, and didn’t fit in because, again, she didn’t understand who she was. In this essay I will be explaining her journey to finding who she was.…

Jeanne is now reaching the developmental stage of her youth where she is learning the harsh truths of the world and formulating her own views and opinions of the world surrounding her. It is not until she encounters her differences in the form of subtle racism that she realizes that being Japanese is not something she can solely push away. She must accept her identity because that is what the society at the time forces her to do: “…I would be seen as someone foreign, or as someone other than American,” (158). She will always be an outsider looking in: unable to truly be one with the culture she so strongly identifies with. She may not even be acknowledged: “…I would…perhaps not be seen at all” (158). She cannot be seen at all representing how alone and invisible she feels in an environment beyond reproach at the time. It is interesting to see how desperate Jeanne is to join the environment that reproaches her for existing. Her acceptance of her Japanese ancestry is a very important transformation that will lead to a more complete fulfillment and understanding of her own…

The story begins with Dina, a girl from a hardscrabble section of Baltimore with “boarded-up row houses the city had promised to renovate,” (210) relating to her reasons for moving to Japan. Aside from high yield economic opportunities that don’t exist in her neighborhood, she pines for a “loveliness” that Japan will offer through its ceremonious bowing, sashimi delicacies, calligraphy, and architecture. (211) Really what she is seeking is a respite from her former environment, where the creed is “Never advertise your poverty. Dress immaculately. Always smell good, not just clean.” (224) Once in Japan Dina soon finds herself in a community of people, also…

As the protagonist kept walking, he entered a narrow side street. There were turns in every five or six steps, showing the street is winding. Houses for rent lined on both sides of the street suggests that fewer people prefer this kind of old district as. Although he discovered a couple lives around there, they were “in foreign dress”, and their “dogs had tags and collars” which are products from the west. These were evidence that Japanese people's life was influenced by western cultures and individuals have adapted to…
