Running Heads: Fantastic Voyage through the Digestive System 2
And the integration of the body System
Captain Picard and his submarine has just been shrunk and placed in a glass of root beer soda
A 55 year old man is eating a hamburger and French fries; he takes a drink of the root beer soda swallowing Captain Piccard and the submarine. He enters the mouth he can see that the hamburger is partly
broken down by the process of chewing and by the chemical action of salivary enzymes produced by the salivary glands.
Now that the food has been chewed and swallowed he then enters the esophagus a long tube
That runs from the mouth to the stomach he can feel the rhythmic waves like muscle movements which force the foods from the throat into the stomach
Captain Piccard the pass by the liver noticing the gall bladder right below it he has now entered the stomach a large sack-like organ that churns the food and bathes it in gastric acid
Some of the burger and fries were partly digested and mixed with the stomach acid this is called chyme.
After being in the stomach for a while Captain Piccard then enters the duodenum the first part of the small intestines. He then enters the jejunum and then the ileum (the final part of the small intestines) The bile produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, the pancreas which captain Piccard noticed right above the stomach produce an enzyme and other digestive enzymes produced by the inner wall of the small intestines help to continue to breakdown the foods.
