Interest: I chose to look at fashion and how it has changed and developed through the decades. Fashion up until the 1960’s varied widely. The 1960’s specifically were known as the “Flower Power” era, or the hippie movement. One of the social youth groups preceding the Flower Power era was referred to as the rockers. The rockers were a group of younger generations who typically wore black clothing such as leather jackets. Their style is echoed in greatly in the idea of punk rock and originated in Europe. In America there was almost retaliation with the fashion here. The hippie movement served as the new type of fashion here in America. Tie-dyed shirts and bell-bottom jeans became extremely popular and were the exact opposite of the previous style in Britain. During the 1970’s things changed again. People everywhere became crazed with disco. Because of the fascination with the disco dancing, the use of polyester became very popular. People began desiring tighter clothing in the 1970’s and polyester was able to be not only tight, but also stretchy. Polyester also shone under the lights seen at discos. The style truly was very flashy, gaudy, and at some times was seen as pompous. During the late 1970’s however, punk fashion became popular, almost in reaction to the “Saturday night fever,” attire. Punk fashion was seen as “anti-fashion.” In the 1980’s the economy was great. People suddenly found themselves with more money and with everyone wealthier, the trend in the 1980’s changed greatly and many things became popular all at once. Women wearing shoulder pads, miniskirts, and leg warmers were all very common during the 1980’s. Jewelry such as large earrings became very popular at the time, and to go along with the “gothic punk” fashion trend that was also present, fingerless gloves were also popular during the 1980’s. Parachute pants, member only jackets, and one-size fits all clothing called “units,” were also very popular. High
