Fate In The Odyssey
Odysseus, the man of many wiles, reveals the theme of fate in The Odyssey. Odysseus reveals the theme of fate throughout his journey home in The Odyssey. He shows that although he never gives up on returning to his home in Ithaca, it was his fate to arrive home. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is in the Land of the Lotus Eaters. When he arrives he has some of his men go and check out the island to see if it is safe. One of his men came back to the ship and told Odysseus that the Lotus Eaters drugged the other men. This reveals Odysseus’ theme of fate because he did not go with his men to see if the Land of the Lotus Eaters was safe. In book five of The Odyssey, Odysseus reveals the theme of fate because Calypso wants to keep him all to herself and marry him. However, the gods tell her she has to set Odysseus free so he can continue what fate has brought him. In the …show more content…
When Odysseus was here, some of his men were eaten by them because the Laestrygonians are cannibals. This reveals Odysseus’ fate because they did not eat him, only his men. While Odysseus is in the sea the sea monsters, Scylla and Charybdis, kill and destroy some of Odysseus men’s ships. This reveals Odysseus’ fate because the sea monsters could of killed him in the sea, but it was his fate not to die. Odysseus is then stuck on Calypso’s island for seven years. Calypso wanted Odysseus to marry her and stay with her forever on her island. She was ordered to set Odysseus free by the gods. This reveals Odysseus’ fate because the gods told Calypso to set him free rather than the gods not doing anything and Odysseus never being able to arrive back home to Ithaca. To conclude, Odysseus reveals the theme of fate throughout the Odyssey. Odysseus followed his fate because he landed up back home in Ithaca at the end of the story. Odysseus’ fate was given by the gods. If it wasn’t then Odysseus would have been dead in the beginning of the

    Odysseus’s behavior was ironic when he deliberately concealed part of Circe’s prophecy from his men because when Odysseus and his men went through Scylla, all of the men were scared and some of the men were killed. In the Odyssey it said that: “My men all blanched against the gloom our eyes were fixed upon that yawning mouth in fear of being devoured” (Homer886) This quote showed that Odysseus’s behavior was ironic because since he did not tell his men that they were going through Scylla so they were terrified. The men just saw this huge whirlpool in the middle of the sea and were not really pleased to hear that they were going through that and not knowing the outcome. They were very scared because the outcome could result in them dying. When the Odyssey was talking about when Odysseus’ men were getting killed The Odyssey said: “Then Scylla made her strike, whisking six of my best men from the shop. It happened to glace aft at ship and oarsmen and caught sight of their arms and legs, dangling high overhead” (Homer886). This quote is showing that Scylla ate six of Odysseus’ best men while they were traveling by her. This was the aftershock of Odysseus not telling his men that they were going to see Scylla in this journey and most likely get eaten. Yet again all of the me were ate only because Odysseus did not tell his men about the ending that they could of all been dead in the end.
