Fate Of Achilles In The Iliad
About Achilles:

In Homer’s ‘The Iliad’ Achilles was a hero and warrior who fought for Agamemnon’s army in the trojan war. He was the son of another greek hero, Peleus and the nereid, Thetis. In Homer’s Ancient Greek society they believed that no one could escape their fate, the only exception of this is that Achilles is given a choice of two fates , to live a long but dull life or a life filled with kleos (glory) and timé (honour), but a brief life. Achille’s parents were aware of this, therefore when the Trojan war started Thetis was worried that Achilles would go fight for the Greeks, resulting in his death. This is because being the best warrior and living up to his areté (personal excellence), tied in with the fate that included his sudden death. To

This insults Achilles timé as Agamemnon has taken his prize that was gifted to him. In Homer’s society other people’s good opinions and gifts gave that hero timé (honour), by taking Achilles prize (Briseis), Achilles sees this as his timé being taken away, hurting his pride. “I take it hard when someone in power uses his authority to rob his equal and strip him of his honour.” This shows how hurt Achilles is, as in Homer’s society, timé was a very important Homeric value and it angers him that Agamemnon has used his authority and power over him to take his timé (honour). Achilles swears to never fight or take orders from Agamemnon again. After doing this he is so outraged by Agamemnon's leadership, that he asks his mother to go to Zeus and make the Greeks start losing. By acting this way Achilles shows qualities such as selfishness and betrayal that are not typical in a ‘hero’. However in Homers society acting or doing bad things doesn’t make you any less of a hero. Achilles actions are supposed to reflect Agamemnon’s poor leadership which ties in with his areté(personal

His strength is unmatched by anyone else and is superior to any other warrior.…

Achilles was called a tragic hero because his flaw was to be selfish. A selfish person lacked consideration for others and was concerned with their own pleasure. In the Iliad, Achilles mostly cared about himself. For example, Agamemnon stole Achilles’ prize possession. For this reason, Achilles refused to join the war because he was angry with Agamemnon. Achilles stated, “But listen while I tell you exactly how I want things to be: ‘I want you to win me great honor and glory in the eyes of all Greeks, so that they give my lovely women back to me and…

In Homer’s book The Iliad, Homer tells the story of the Trojan War with Achilles, the best Greek warrior. However, Achilles does not like Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae, because he took Briseis (Briseis was a woman that Achilles had received as a war prize). This is the reason why Achilles was raged at Agamemnon. In a rage, Achilles wants to kill all of the Trojans, especially Hector, the best Trojan warrior. Patroclus, Achilles’ best friend goes out to the battle field as Achilles (wearing his armor), trying to kill Hector but instead Hector kills Patroclus thinking he has killed Achilles. When Achilles finds out about this, he is very mad and goes out to kill Hector himself. When he kills Hector, he is very arrogant about it. Only after this happens does Achilles get Briseis back from Agamemnon.…

Achilles shows various forms of commitment in the Iliad. This god does not appear as often as others do, but when he does he appears with a bang. He and Agamemnon have ongoing beef, and because of this he resides from the Achaen army. The Achaens need his help to defeat Troy but he is so committed to his hatred for Agamemnon that he refuses to help. “never again, he’ll never rob me blind with his twistsul words again. Once is enough for him. Die and be damned for all I care” (9, 455-457). The beef begins when Agamemnon steals Achilles’ wife from him, whom he cherished very dearly. In the text it is very clear that Achilles is committed to his love for this woman, which isn’t common for the gods to do. “…anguish gripped Achilles. The heart…

This is important because it reminds us that heroism is not only glory and victory, but that good leadership is extremely important, because if a hero sends his men into battle without giving good counsel beforehand, then he will look bad if they end up getting killed. When Aias and Odysseus are sent by Agamemnon to implore with Achilles' to fight for the Greeks, Achilles disagrees with them, saying "There was no gratitude given for fighting continuously against your enemies”. At this point in his life Achilles wants peace and not have to fight battles that aren’t worth fighting, especially putting the lives of others in danger. It wasn’t until he lost Patroclus, his closest friend the strongest relationship that his ever had with anyone that he was ready to go to battle for. Patroclus becomes the prime motivation for Achilles to return to battle. The death of his friend reinforces a great deal of Achilles' actions and emotions about the Trojan War. His death stirred a lot of different emotions within Achilles, and made him reevaluate his life and believes. He didn’t want to have to bury his best friend, he couldn’t bare the loss and not being able to see him…

“Swift” Achilles, having been a famed and valiant soldier, was sought after and loved by all, except his adversary Agamemnon. He was a prominent warrior known for his great strength that actually caused the Achaeans to win many battles. How was Achilles such a bloodlust hero? A hero is one who is “admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” This warrior is all three of these points. Achilles’ honorable attitude for his loved ones, bravery in times of adversity, and as the definition states, “outstanding achievements” make him a hero beyond recognition.…

The main character focus in The Iliad is Achilles. Achilles is the son of Thetis, an immortal sea-nymph, and Peleus, the king of the Myrmidons. Because he was the son of Thetis, he was a demigod, which meant that he had one parent who was a God and another parent who was human. Demigods were much stronger than regular humans but did not have as much power as a God. Achilles was the greatest warrior in the Greek army, but that did not make him a hero. Achilles had many character flaws. He was a cry-baby. Whenever something did not go his way, he would cry to his mother about it like she could fix all of his problems. Sometimes she…

Simone Weil’s portrayal of the forces within the Iliad shows violence reducing its conveyer and its heirs to mere objects and Achilles being the embodiment of the force’s multivalent meaning as it develops from violence to a gallant virtue. This can be interpreted from Achilles first being introduced as the archetype of a caustic potency but soon realizes that his true force is greater than the simple martial dominance over another when he self-imprisons himself within his tent. When Achilles is not present in the theater of war, force is shown to be the possible fury of the Greek leader and the parenthetic interval in time because the plot is awaiting his reappearance in combat. During the absence of Achilles, time is measured narratologically through the Greeks lacking leadership and the dominance that Hector and the Trojans hold through their violent force; meanwhile, for Achilles, force becomes a moral virtue with friendship as a stake in the war through his combined losses of Briseis, Agamemnon, and Patroclos to the Trojans; thus, leading to his decision of abandoning his self-imprisonment and returning to the municipal of the Greeks. His kind-heartedness towards Priam opens Achilles to a moral outlook of forces as a valiant quality and the reader toward a aspect of time within the narrative; consequently, making the future become the caring factor of Achilles as he makes his way towards the end of narrative.…

Achilles bluffed through a lot of his words. In Book 1, he tried playing it cool by helping Chryses get his daughter back from Agamemnon. “Just how, Agamemnon, great field marshal…most grasping man alive, how can the generous Argives give you prizes now? – So return the girl to the god, at least for now. We Achaeans will pay you back, three, four times over, if Zeus will grant us the gift, somehow, someday, to raze Troy’s massive ramparts to the ground” (81). He tried to sound powerful and heroic, so Agamemnon would easily return the girl without wanting more from him. Agamemnon knew better and put Achilles in his spot. “Not so quickly, brave as you are, godlike Achilles—trying to cheat me. Oh no, you won’t get past me, take me in that way! What do you want? To cling to your own prize while I sit calmly by—empty-handed here?—No—if our generous Argives will give me a prize, a match for my desires, equal to what I’ve lost, well and good” (82). Achilles was still standing his ground so he wouldn’t look weak for Agamemnon. Even though Achilles tried so hard to keep his words and actions strong, Agamemnon easily broke him by telling him to give up Briseis. “But I, I will be there in person at your tents to take Briseis in all her beauty, your own prize” (83). Hearing this, Achilles gave up on sounding heroic and tried to kill Agamemnon. He was so angry that he didn’t even keep his word on helping people out. He did go through with it, but he hated himself for it. He left and cried to himself. So Achilles bluffed his strength through his words.…
