Father image in “The Triumph of the Egg”
“The Triumph of the Egg” is one of the most famous short stories of Sherwood Anderson. In the story, “egg” just represents the American Dream, and the title of the story actually means the break of American Dream. Therefore, the hero of this short story - “Father” is firmly connected with the break of his American Dream. Father’s American Dream is to get up in the world and become rich overnight. Thus, he ventures to raise chickens and open a small restaurant to make his dream come true. However, due to various reasons, his entire endeavor just turns into a bubble, which makes Father give up his American passion.
At the very beginning, the story tells us that Father was intended by nature to be a cheerful, kindly man, and he led a happy and satisfied single life. But everything changed after being married with a country school-teacher. Father came to be ambitious, and he launched into raising chickens. Father had worked as laborer for ten years on the farm, but he got nothing in return expect some deformed chickens, which became Father’s greatest treasure in the following venture. And even though the first venture turned out badly, he continued the second one – embarking in the restaurant business. Father became habitually silent and discouraged. In the little restaurant, Father made his determined efforts to get succeed. To attract more customers, Father decided to entertain the people who came to eat at his restaurant by showing his treasure – the deformed chickens in bottles and playing egg tricks. However, no matter how passionately he performed, the young customer paid little attention to his performance and showed no appreciation of it. Father felt so disappointed and embarrassed that he couldn’t help crying like a boy beside Mother. Eventually, Father’s American Dream was broken, and his family’s life did not show any uplift.
Father is such industrious as a bee, but he is a
