I would be writing about interest groups and bureaucracy. The FDA bureaucracy article in a way stresses the importance or impact of the executive agency in carrying out its functions. I find testing how politicians try to sway the FDA (and other administrative agencies) in a way to suit their purpose is both necessary and may have a potential for undermining the administration. I thought the research question is of high importance; being able to test the efficiency (in terms of timeliness and quality of outcomes) of an administrative agency using the FDA as a case study. While different agencies will have their peculiarities, it is still necessary to be able to assess them this way. A drawback to this test could be something entirely unrelated…
The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 and the Meat Inspection Act of 1906 were both widely accredited to a book called 'The Jungle' that was written by the Progressive author Upton Sinclair. Upton Sinclair revealed the unhygienic and unsanitary methods used by the food industry and a scandal emerged about the quality and purity of food sold to the U.S. public. The Jungle was published in 1906 and became an international best seller. Upton Sinclair exposed Chicago's meatpacking industry telling lurid tales of diseased meat, of dead rats and the poison that killed them being thrown into the processing vats to make…
The audience for this essay is going to be the instructor of my English 111 course, Professor John Hansen, and my classmates, I am writing this essay for my Ivy Tech online course. There will be various levels of knowledge concerning this article’s topic. My classmates will all have read some article pertaining to the health and food industry but they will all be somewhat different. Some people may have knowledge on this subject from other media outlets or their own experience however, others may not. Although I cannot be certain regarding the amount of knowledge the audience will have, I anticipate they will have a basic level of understanding on this topic. The topic of my essay is extremely applicable to the current…
The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA for short, is a government agency responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation, and by regulating the manufacture, marketing, and distribution of tobacco products. The FDA is also responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed innovations that make medicines and foods more effective, safer, and more affordable; and helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to use medicines and foods, and to reduce tobacco use to improve health (About FDA 1). I am deeply concerned about how the FDA is regulating food. In my opinion, the FDA is failing miserably with their duties to the citizens of the United States of America. They appear to be more interested in profit than with the overall well being of the public. They are allowing people to consume dangerous amounts of fluoride. Studies have shown that food additives are causing serious health related issues. I feel that the FDA needs a massive overhaul in their top-level leadership positions in order for them to improve.…
Identifying health needs of the population – The health needs of the population are determined by the incidence of disease and trends identified. Nationally collated can identify health trends in the entire country. Statistics can be used to determine how health can be improved or how areas of concern can be highlighted and effects of ill health reduced or prevented. A responsibility of health professionals is to report incidences of specific diseases and illnesses so the information can be centrally collated and acted on. Factors such as age, genetics, environment, lifestyle, education and take up of preventive measures for example immunisation may relate to patterns of illness and disease. The needs of the public are governed by social, financial and economic factors as well.…
Pure Food and Drug Act (1906): An act which prevents the production and sale of food, drugs, alcohol, or medicines which are considered poisonous or misbranded. this act was passed in 1906 and was purposed for protecting the public from any consumerism based harm. It was also made in response to various cases where consumers were caused medical harm by the ill preparation of food or falsified medicine. Upton Sinclair (See: Upton Sinclair) brought light to a plethora of problems that occurred when food productions were unmonitored. He wrote them all out in ‘The Jungle’, a book which became something of a scandal when it was published. President Roosevelt (See: Theodore Roosevelt) was in such large favour of this Act which he passed,…
In public health many strategies were put in place to increase someone’s life span, prevent illness and encourage healthy things. They had many roles within these strategies, starting with keeping a record of the health status of the population. They did this because they could then see what the overall health was and then they would prevent life threatening diseasing from coming out. This means they would be able to inform people with the problems that could occur. An example of this would have been the high levels of obesity.…
Food safety is a topic that did not really cross people’s mind too much until recently. Due to a number of illnesses caused by tainted foods in the past couple years or so, this subject has moved to the front of many individuals’ minds. Food safety issues come about during the sanitation, processing, handling, and shipping of foods across America. Even the simplest mistake in either the shipping, processing, sanitation, or handling of the food could result in an illness when consumed by a customer(s). Although the government wants consumers to be happy and healthy, they have a horrible way of showing they care. Government agencies are responsible for setting food safety standards, conducting inspections, and making sure that food safety standards are met. The government should completely remove themselves from inspecting foods because with them around food is not getting any safer.…

The hypothalamus sends signals to tell your body if you need gain or lose weight in order to adjust hunger, activity and metabolism and keep your weight regulated. When you lose weight your muscles start burning less energy because your metabolism is suppressed. Your body doesn’t know that you need to lose weight so it just reacts to losing a lot of weight as it is being starved. “Studies have shown that girls who diet as teenagers are three times more likely to be overweight five years later.”…
“Before Ronald Regan came to power, federal policy emphasized treatment and public education, assuming that these strategies would diminish demand” (Karger & Stoesz, 2013, p. 306). Substance addiction has been a growing problem ever since the late 1800’s when the addiction of cocaine, opium and heroin started. “Chinese laborers who came to work on U.S. railroads in the 1850s and 1860s brought with them the practice of opium smoking” (A social history, 1995-2013). This analysis examines the problem with drug addiction and how the Public…
2. Describe the circumstances at which you would prepare a strategic plan to include this new law in your marketing decisions, knowing this new law may or may not take effect.…
It wouldn't make sense for the FDA to be in charge of the safety and labeling of all of our food except for GMO-free foods. We shouldn't be splitting the responsibility for food safety and labeling between different agencies. It will only cause a lot of confusion for everyone. When something goes wrong, we won't know who's responsible. If the FDA is in charge when a recall or something else happens, then there's one agency people can look to for answers. When you have 50 different "agencies" regulating safety and labeling then who's to blame or going to get the information out about a recall? The states the food was…
Public health (PH) is an issue continually on the UK Government agenda and one in which it is anticipated that all health professionals will participate in (Nuttall, 2008). PH focuses on the health and well-being of a society and is the most effective means of protecting and improving it. It addresses the root causes of illness and disease, including the interacting social environmental, biological, and psychological dimensions, as well as the provision of effective health services. PH relies on evidence, judgement and skills and promotes the participation of the populations who are themselves the subject of policy and action (United Kingdom Public Health Association (UKPHA), 2008).…
In understanding regulatory agencies the differences between regulation and legislation needs defining. Legislation is the law that has been passed by a voting process and regulation is the responsibility of the regulatory board appointed to enforce laws once the law is passed; it sets forth rules on how the laws are to be implemented and to what degree. In health care the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has the predominant responsibility to enforce legislation that impacts the health and well-being of Americans. Under the umbrella of HHS there are 13 regulatory agencies tasked with setting rules on the enforcement of the legislation passed by lawmakers.…
