Fe2 +/H2o-Mediated Synthesis Lab Report
Summary of Presentation:
Fe2+/H2O- mediated synthesis of Melanins: Cases of Homogentisic acid, serotonin, and norepinephrine

The powerpoint presentation that I attended was titled, “Fe2+/H2O- mediated synthesis of Melanins: Cases of Homogentisic acid, serotonin, and norepinephrine,” the research covered melanin which is a dark pigmentation that can cause other complication and pathological conditions such as, vitiligo and ochronosis. It is believed that melanin protects from ultraviolet light rays, and immobilization of toxic ions. There are several types of melanin; eumelanin and pheomelanin (found mostly in animals as L-DOPA), Neuromelanin (found in brain as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin), Allo Melanin (found in plants, as catechol, and pyrogallol), Pyomelanin (found in fungi or bacteria as homogentisic acid)

Melanin is important to this experiment because, the structure of melanin is not fully known. With more knowledge about this chemical, and the way it function, we would be able to understand what causes it to overproduce and the pathological, and genetic conditions associated with it

The small scale experiments were performed three times, where: each compound was mixed with a fixed amount of Fe2+ and various amount of H2O2 and H2O. Solutions were left to react for 3 days, and analyzed by size exclusion chromatography and UV-Vis absorbances were taken. In the large scale experiments, approximately 100 mg of each compound was mixed with fixed amounts of Fe2+ and H20 and varying h2O2 amounts. They sat until the compound reacted away and were analyzed via size exclusion chromatography. They were then purified by dialysis in water for 3 days, changing water several times throughout. Following, they were then frozen and dried using freeze-dry system. Solids retrieved and analyzed using FT-IR

Chemists often find a method to determine the level of “greenness” of a chemical reaction, or its “atom economy”. A higher atom economy is preferable because a greater amount of the reactants will be present in the product as opposed to the byproduct.1 A Suzuki reaction is classified as an organic, coupling reaction that includes boronic acid and a halide that are catalyzed by a palladium complex under basic conditions. Other palladium- catalyzed coupling mechanisms include the Heck and Stille reactions. Palladium typically exists in the oxidation states of 0, +2, and +4. PdCl2 is usually the starting compound for several other heterogeneous palladium catalysts such as Pd/C and Pd/BaSO4.1 Suzuki coupling is an efficient way to…

The materials were first acquired then with the groups in the class each team was given a test solution to create and acquire information from then all the information was put together in order to save time. Specifically the group created test solutions #8, #9, and #10. Once the solutions were created, they were stirred to ensure that the reaction had fully occurred. Then the solutions were placed in a spectrometer that was set to a wavelength of 450nm. The absorption for each of the solutions was measured and recorded. With the whole data collected from the overall group a calibration curve was created from the reference solutions and the concentrations of FeSCN2+ at equilibrium was demined by finding the absorbance from the test solutions on the calibration curve and tracing it to their concentrations. The initial concentrations of Fe3+ and SCN- were found using the M1V1 = M2V2 equation along with the concentration of FeSCN2+ used in the calibration curve. Then using the chart that organizes the initial, change, and equilibrium concentrations of a specific products and reactions; the concentration of Fe3+ and SCN- was determined. With the concentrations of the products and the reactants the Keq was determined.…

Dry, sublimed ferrocene (93 mg) was added to a reaction tube. Later, 0.35 mL of acetic anhydride and 0.1 mL of 85% phosphoric acid were also added. The reaction tube was capped using a septum, and a syringe needle was poked through. This was warmed over a steam bath and stirred for 10 minutes after it began to boil, forming a dark brown color. The tube was then cooled to room temperature, then further cooled in ice. A solution of 0.5mL was added, dropwise w/ mixing. 3M NaOH was added until the pH of the solution was neutral. The product was vacuum filtrated and pressed dry.…

Ethanol (100ml), potassium hydroxide (8.065g, 2.568mmol) and water (5ml) were added in order to 2,4,5-triphenyl-1H-imidazol (0.9402g, 3.17mmol). The mixture was stirred until clear before it was cooled to 5 ºC. A solution of potassium ferricyanide (3.0021 g, 9.085mmol), water (250ml) and ethanol (100ml) was prepared and added dropwise into the mixture ensuring the temperature did not rise above 10 ºC. A grey precipitate was isolated from the yellow mixture through vacuum filtration and washed with water (50ml x 5) and 50% aqueous ethanol. The mixture was dried under vaccuum suction and the melting point was determined. Yield: 0.85g, 90.8% m.p-199.8-200.3ºC. A portion of the dimer (0.0305 g, 0.0514mmol) was quantitatively dissolved in 25ml of toluene. The solution was left for 60min until colorless. The UV-Vis spectra was recorded for the colorless sample. The solution was irradiated using a lamp resulting in a purple solution and the UV-Vis spectrum was retaken. The purpose of this laboratory was to determine how different substances have different solubilities in a given solvent. This was accomplished using the method of chromatography. The solubility of each substance was first determined by dropping a drop or two of each on a line drawn 2 inches above the bottom of a piece of paper. Then the paper was lightly bent in order to tape both sides of the paper leaving about a 4 centimeter gap so that the sides of the paper are not touching. The paper was then put into a beaker of a hydrochloric acid, ethanol, and butanol mixture, being sure that the paper does not touch the sides of the beaker, and then topped. After the eluting solution has risen to within two centimeters of the top of the filter paper, the paper was removed from the beaker, dried, and was stained with a staining reagent solution containing potassium ferrocyanide and potassium iodide. This reagent forms colored precipitates or reaction products with many cations, including all of those used in this experiment. The distance of which the spots moved were determined by calculating the Rf value of each substance. The Rf value is determined by following formula:…

The domain of prosecutors has been extended to provide greater authority. An example of domain expansion of the prosecutors is improving police-prosecutors relationships. Truthfully, police officers and prosecutors are looked at as the bad guys in the eyes of the public. They are both to serve justice, even though they have different perspectives on the law. For example, the police officers consider a case to be closed when the suspect is arrest, but the prosecutor needs obtain more information and evidence to win the case in court. Prosecutors depend off of the police to obtain a conviction; this all depends on how the police officers investigate and the quality of their arrests. Although both police officers and prosecutors have sought strategies…

Introduction: The cycle of a cell roughly doubles it volume of cytoplasm and duplicates its genetic information i.e. replicated DNA. Then it divides the genetic information equally into two daughter nuclei. The cell cycle can be divided into two phases interphase and mitotic phase. The time spent in these phases depends upon the type of cell and its particular developmental or physiological state. Cells comprising rapidly growing tissues, like those in the root tip of a plant spend a comparatively long time in the mitotic phase, whereas those cells comprising slow-growing tissues would spend most of their lives in interphase. Non-dividing cells remain in interphase and never enter the mitotic phase. (Lab Manual 64)…

The MC1R (Melanocortin 1 receptor) gene is partly responsible for determining whether or not a person has fair skin, a certain hair color or UV radiation sensitivity. The MC1r gene provides instructions for making a protein call Melanocortin that plays the role in normal pigmentation. The receptor is primarily located on the surface of melanocytes, which are specialized cells that produce pigment called melanin. The melanin is the substance that gives hair, skin, and eyes their color. Melanocytes make two forms of melanin; eumelanin and pheomelanin. A certain amount of these two pigments help determine a persons’ hair and skin color.…
