Fear In Cheryl Strayed's Wild
Kishore Anuska Taken by fear Fear is an essential reaction to any form of danger such as physical or emotional. The importance of fear is widely needed however in many circumstances we fear in situations that are far from scary or harmful. It might be from a bad experiences or something that can trigger from our past or simply what we see on television or hear from the news. Exposing ourselves to fear might be difficult to overcome but once we do its the best to conquer it. In the book Wild by Cheryl Strayed tries to overcome her fears by finding her inner self and that she can be the happier versions of herself by discovering the missing essence of her life. Her fear is inside her but she keeps telling herself that she's fine. The fear of leaving home can be very intense to anyone. Strayed has a fear of leaving home because thats where she lived her life, her family stayed there and her childhood memories consist there. She traveled all over the country but she always came back to Minnesota. Strayed knew she was leaving for good so she went and visited her mothers grave for good. The biggest fear of all is knowing that your mother doesn't have long to live. She was the only one out of her siblings who spend the most time with her mother when she was sick. She dealt with the pain to see her mother suffer and in hospice care. After her mother’s death, strayed has nightmares of killing her mother again and again. Her dreams were so realistic that she would wake up screaming, but nothing could make the dreams go …show more content…
When getting into cars she was afraid they could be murders or rapists . Also when she was traveling with Frank she found whiskey and a gun in his car. She was terrified that she was in danger, however she later realized she was fine when he offered her licorice. The risk she was taking i felt while i was reading would cause the death of her. The fear of failure was a big part of strayed throughout her hike. She was afraid of failing herself and her mission to become a new person. In the tahoe area she took the bus because it was dangerous to cross the snow. She felt she was going to complete her journey and she was cheating herself. Lastly , she feared love because she doesn't know what she wants when it came to love. After a week of her mother’s death she started kissing different man. “I only made out with them and the others that followed—vowing not to cross a sexual line that held some meaning to me—but still I knew I was wrong to cheat and lie. I felt trapped by my own inability to either leave Paul or stay true, so I waited for him to leave me, to go to graduate school alone, though of course he refused”(45). Fear can stop anyone from succeeding but theres an extent to risks. Strayed showed herself as very strong and trying her best to hide her feeling when in fact it showed in her book.
