Fear is a powerful instinct that all living things have. Fear can save one from danger and make one more aware of his/her world. However, fears aren’t always based on fact and can be harmful. Fear can dictate one’s thinking and actions. Stories by Edgar Allan Poe show the characters fears lead to paranoia, insanity, hallucinations, and isolation. In his writing, Poe uses irony, symbolism, and imagery to illustrate how fear distorts people's minds until leading them to insanity and that the cure is hopeful, logical

    The second thing that Poe does to create fear is the clock of the black room. Every hour, on the hour the clock of the black room chimes and it causes every single person of the party to stop everything they are doing. This causes a silence to fall across every single room and everyone at the party. The clock causes everyone to be unsettled and give a sense of discomfort for a short period of time before they eventually shrug it off.     The Gift of Fear," a psychology book by Gavin De Becker, is a great valuable book.
