Central High School AP Psychology

Thinking Critically About Psychology
1. What am I being asked to believe or accept? 2. What evidence is available to support the assertion? 3. Are there alternative ways of interpreting the evidence? 4. What additional evidence would help to evaluate the alternatives? 5. What conclusions are most reasonable?

Reliability and Validity
Evidence addressing a hypothesis should be judged in terms of reliability and validity.

Theories
• A theory is an integrated set of statements designed to account for and predict ways of controlling certain phenomena. • They are tentative explanations that must be subjected to scientific evaluation. • They are constantly being formulated, evaluated, reformulated, and sometimes abandoned based on research results.

Goals of Psychological Research

• • • •

To describe the phenomenon To make accurate predictions To demonstrate some control over the variables To explain the phenomenon with confidence

Research Methods in Psychology

Naturalistic Observation
• Feature: The process of watching without interfering as behavior occurs in the natural environment • Strengths: Provides descriptive data about behavior presumably uncontaminated by outside influences. • Pitfalls: Observer bias and participant selfconsciousness can distort results

Case Studies
• Feature: Intensive examination of the behavior and mental processes associated with a specific person, group or situation. • Strengths: Provide detailed descriptive analysis of new, complex, or rare phenomenon. • Pitfalls: May not provide representative picture of phenomena.

Surveys
• Feature: Standard set of questions asked of a large number of participants – asks people about their behavior, attitudes, beliefs, and opinions • Strengths: Gather large amounts of descriptive data relatively quickly and inexpensively. • Pitfalls: Sampling errors, poorly phrased questions, and response

    Finding Fish

The book, finding fish, is a poignant autobiography of the life of Antwone Quenton Fisher, an African American boy who suffered a tumultuous childhood in a foster care setting. He was born on 8-3-1959 in a Cleveland prison to Eva Mae Fisher. She was incarcerated for the shooting death of his father, her boyfriend at the time, Eddie Elkins. Initially, he spent his first few weeks of his life in a Cleveland orphanage. Then he was fostered by a wonderful woman named Mrs. Nellie Strange. She lovingly cared for him for two years. One 10-11-1961 he was placed in the foster home of the Reverend and Mrs. Pickett, an African American couple who came from southern black heritage. Mr. Pickett was a kind man with a doctorate in medicine and his wife, the abuser, was the matriarch of the family. For the next eighteen years of Antwone’s life, he would suffer terrible physical, verbal and emotional abuse in this home, even though he would have a total of thirteen social workers “monitoring” his case. In the Pickett’s home, Antwone had three foster siblings; Flo, Dwight and Keith. Antwone suffers so much chronic abuse that he never feels confident enough to tell any of his social workers about his abuse. He is even sexually abused by Willenda, a babysitter who cares for the children at times. Antwone is finally kicked out of the home around his sixteenth birthday and he finds himself at George Junior Republic, a reform school for boys. Even though he isn’t a trouble maker, he loves being there because he finds teachers who really mentor him. While he lives there, he is able to take tests and graduate early from high school. Unfortunately now he has “graduated’ from the foster care system since he is eighteen and he is forced to become homeless and sell drugs for money. The best thing that ever happens to him is when he enrolls in the United States Navy. While serving an eleven year term, he develops…

    Criminological Theory

    • 985 Words
    • 4 Pages

A theory is a useful tool that helps people understands the world around them. For example, in criminology, a theory helps the public understand the functioning of the criminal justice system, the occurrence of crimes and the methods or approaches people implement when committing crimes. In many instances, theory suggests the way things are, not the way they should be. For example, a theory is not naturally good or bad; however, people often use theories for good or bad purposes (William & McShane, 2010).…

The study focused on finding out if the Weber’s law applies to judgment of size. The present research was designed to account the area of the target as well as the distance, using as the visual concept, and the prediction made that range estimation would follow the said law. In this experiment we asked the subjects to assume a midpoint on 30 lines comprised of ten 2 inch lines, ten 4 inch line and ten 6 inch line. Then we computed each mean error. The results support Weber’s law on judgment size. 2 inch lines have lesser mean error that 6 inch line. 4 inch line has greater mean error than 2 inch line, Based on the results, we conclude that there is a relationship between the Weber’s law and visual perception of the subject.…
