Pedro Vial is one of the earliest European explorers and trailblazers on the Southern Plains (Wishart 1). Domingo Cabello y Robles, who is the governor of Texas, sent Pedro Vial to visit the tribes along the Red River in 1784 (Tyson 2). It means something when the governor of a state sends you to do a task for him. This shows that Pedro is a well- known figure. This voyage requested from the governor was to find the best course to travel between the “Spanish provincial capitals of San Antonio, Texas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico” (Wishart 1). By the end of the year1789, Pedro Vial traversed miles upon miles of land, he explored the present day states of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Louisiana (Tyson 2). The time that Vial dedicated to his expeditions…

Francisco Pizarro was born in Trujillo, Spain, in 1476. He was born into a family of farmers, who were, uneducated, and poor. Ever since Francisco was young he always dreamed of going to the new world. In 1513, Francisco left on his first voyage with Balboa. The expedition led to the discover of the Pacific Ocean. After their discovery, Francisco arrested Balboa under the orders Pedro Arias de Ávila, who was the Governor of Castilla de Oro. Francisco then moved to Panama City, where he became mayer. After living in Panama for a few years Francisco began his expedition against the Inca’s. Pizarro led three expeditions against the Inca’s, The first two failed, due to lack of provisions and men, but the third proved to be successful. During the war, Francisco allied with a man named Diego de Almagro and a priest named Hernando de Luque. The war lasted seven years, and both sides suffered severely. About six years into the war, Pizarro invited the Inca emperor(whose name was Atahualpa) to a feast, in his fort, in his honor. Atahualpa consented and once he enters the fort he and his army of six thousand is ambushed. The emperor was taken captive and Pizarro ransoms Atahualpa,…
Hernanando Cortes was a Spanish conquistador who is known for conquering and bringing the downfall of the Aztec empire. He lead the first expedition into the new world for France and claim land all across. After all of Cortes’s conquests, he was made governor of New Spain for a brief time. Cortes was successful in his conquests of the New World because of his courage to explore new lands, find riches, and his resources available to him. Though, he may seem interesting, his life was actually quite normal until his expedition into the new world.…
In the book it tells that almost of thirty years of the exploration, the discoveries of Columbus seemed illustory. They tell that in 1519 the promise came true by Hernan Cortes’s march into Mexico. Almost in the year of 1545, the spanish conquest expanded from the north of Mexico to the souther part of Chile, and that caused the New World to make richier and filled the Spanish treasure chest. Cortes did not had a good communication between the Native Americans and him. He could not speak any Native Americans language. But he had the fortune to arrive first in the Yucatan, where they were received from a chief from the tabasco people who know several native language, her name was Malinali.…
Fidel Lopez, an immigrant from Guatemala was one of the many assaulted in the La Riots. When the La Riot was over, he was willing to forgive and forget those who caused his mental and physical damages. He is not the “forgotten victim from Florence and Normandie” anymore, he was now a man to be remembered by. However, his actions had drawbacks. Due to the riots, he suffered from mental disability, financial struggle and his inability to take advantage of his human rights.…
Many turned to crime in El Barrio as a result of peer pressure, family issues, and other situations that steered them to the underground economy of selling crack. Philippe showed this by examining the success of the Italian Americans and Mafia who ran the streets prior to the migration of the Puerto Ricans. that combined with the social restrictions put on those who live in the neighborhood gave way for youth to fall captive to this predictament. Cultural Reproduction is also a highly noted theory in which he uses. In regards to crack one boy said "everybody is doing it...it is impossible to keep away from it because it is practically thrown at you". The glorification of underground crime helps to "promote and encourage" the youth which is a recycling for future crime. Political economy comes the fore as well. Marx stated "the political economy regards the Proletarian...like a horse, he must receive enough to enable him to work. It does not consider him, during the time when he is not working, as a human being". This is exemplified in Philippe describing the background of the Puerto Rican Jibaros and how they along with other groups came to America (land of the free) to escape the poverty in their land only to land in even dire circumstances. The U.S. political agenda in Puerto Rico which causes the resistance of the…
Certain behaviors demonstrated by the adolescent become unregulated and uncontrolled. These youths grow up and due to their unregulated behavior, consequently corrupt the future youths of the community they live in (Why Do Youth Join Gangs?). Their behaviors become cultural norms within the community resulting in the creation of barriers that prevent social and economic opportunities. The defiant character that may manifest from gang affiliation produces a “fatalistic view of the world” providing the youth with the interpretation that everything or anything that happens around them is fate and…
On May 16, 2017 I Interviewed Manuel Plasencia about what it means to be American to him. According to Manuel, Dental Assistant, he feels like he sometimes has equal rights in America, because at time he is entitled to entitlement and at times not because the predicate society. He strongly feels like he would want to change the National Financial Program, because he gets money taken away, which in his point of view is wrong. Manuel has come to realize if he had the chance to leave America he would leave, he would go to Germany. It is more liberal and progressive there. He has had Financial Help from his Family, which has made his life in America less complicated throughout these years. If Manuel could change any law it would be the regressive tax law.…
I am Justin D Delarosa, I'm a 6’3, Mexican American, with a little Native American. I enjoy being with friends and making jokes. Some may say that i'm not special, but I would like to say that I am. I'd like to say that i'm a natural cook. Since I began cooking in 2009, I would usually make good food, though I made a few mishaps, there would usually always be good meals and desserts. Such as; Mexican food, cakes, cookies, lasagna, and many other dishes.…
Victor Rios, the author of the book Punished focused on the struggles that Latino and African American young men ages 14-18 face when it comes to coping when all odds are against them. Rios (2011) establishes the phrase “Youth Control Complex” which he defines as “ a system in which schools, police, probation officers, families, community centers, the media, and other systems treat young people’s everyday behaviors as criminal activity” (XIV). The reality of these young men is that, all their societal systems are failing them. Teachers don’t care about teaching students, the criminal justice system is only waiting on them to walk the streets or seem “suspicious” for them to get arrested, friends “act bad” to gain respect amongst each other…
The study of female gangs is not complete. This is still a subject that lacks the attention it should have. In a male dominated society, researchers still turn a blind eye to the significance of the role female gang members have on society. The people who have shown an interest have primarily researched Latina gang members. However, female gangsters come in all races. Unfortunately, this assignment will be focused more on the details obtained about the Latina gang member rather than female gangsters in general. Young women join gangs for a number of reasons, Sanctuary from abuse, economic reasons; because their boyfriend is in a gang, the gang life is something they were raised in or simply because of…
There are many different reasons as to why a young person may join a gang that lives in the inner city, however for this paper, only a few will be discussed. One reason that a young person may join a gang is peer pressure from other teenagers and the need to fit in. A young person growing up in a family that has gang members in it is another reason for a young person to join a gang. “One way to know about gangs is to know gang members, to live with gang members, to see gang members on neighborhood streets” (Cadwallader 2002). If a young person is exposed to gangs then the chances are good that they will join that gang so that they fit in or to make their family members…
