The HIM professional can have a direct impact on the quality or compliance of specific operations or employees within a healthcare institution. Healthcare institutions, such as hospitals, can be huge institutions made up of hundreds or even thousands of treatment or operation specific areas operation. This can include anything from the surgeon who performs coronary artery bypass to the neonatal intensive care nurse who directly cares for struggling newborns to the physical plant worker who makes sure all the lights in the building stay on and the operating room is maintained at a certain temperature. As an overall institution the thought of identifying risk and liability within the organization can be quite overwhelming and daunting. The best way to approach this is to break things down into specific issues or areas and focus on one thing at a time, with the overall goal to be improving quality and reducing risk to the institution. This paper will focus on three specific scenarios that represent an area of risk and liability for the institution. These three scenarios will include the safety of blood transfusions within a hospital, dealing with power failure risks within a hospital and using operational checklists to improve employee efficiency, consistency and reducing the human factor of making mistakes.…

Surgical nurses are considered a very important part of a surgical team. Surgical nurses take on many key roles in life saving surgical procedures and work in challenging environments. On another note, nursing professionals at almost any level can provide care to surgical patients and the day-to-day duties will vary according to what level of expertise the nurse obtains.…
Being a doctor is both a rewarding and a challenging career. Physicians examine, treat, and diagnose patients and ultimately save lives. My initial thought was why did the procedure not go to plan and why did the patient react in the way she did. The previous procedure was fine and she knew what it involved she had her arm out ready for her bloods to be taken, she thought it wouldn’t hurt because it has always gone ok for her with minimal distress and pain so she wouldn’t be expecting that experience. Now the behaviour has changed and gets distressed when she sees the nurse with the needle. Another thought would be is she afraid of the nurse or the needle. Does the patient feel under pressure now to have her bloods taken.…

Hello Karen, I enjoyed reading your introduction. I laughed when reading about your fear of needles, as I also fear needles and still feel faint when given a shot. I never thought that I would be working in healthcare either. My older sister has been a nurse since 1970 and was encouraging me into the nursing field after I had lost my job at 44 years old. Going back to school at that age was very intimidating and I envisioned myself working in mental health. My favorite rotation was also the psychiatric rotation and I wanted to be a psych nurse. It sounds like you love your job and I wish you all the best in this class and in completing your BSN.…
Step one is to get the requisition and take it into the patients room, you use this to verify the patient. You first identify yourself and indicate the procedure that is about to take place. Check the date and order time on the requisition form. Verify their name, date of birth, and sex. You have to verify the patients allergies to make sure they are not allergic to latex or any of the antiseptics or adhesives that are to be used. If patient is unresponsive you are not allowed to draw the blood unless they have a patient sticker on their armband. You have to verify who the person is. You then check the requisition form for what tests are being requested so you will know what and how many of each tubes to draw blood into.…
My experience with Capillary punctures was not too scary. My first two pokes had me nervous, but capillary punctures are not too bad for me. With venipunctures I was very nervous, I feel like I am struggling more now with venipunctures than the first time. I don’t get nervous when I am going in, I get nervous once my needle is inside I panic a little and freeze. I think I freeze after my needle is in because I am excited and feel rushed, so I end up messing up with the following steps.…
The clinical skill I have chosen to reflect on within this essay is my first IV start. I have chosen this as my first clinical placement is on a surgical unit, where Intravenous therapy is a widely used to administer medication. I was very happy to finally be able to start developing this skill as I have seen it done several time and was ever able to acquire the process in which is needed to start an intravenous.…
