Throughout the film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring directed by Peter Jackson, Jackson displays how Adversity Influences and shapes a character's identity through the protagonist Aragorn “strider”. Aragorn, the heir of Isildur, joined the journey to destroy the ring and defeat Sauron. During their quest Aragorn's identity was shaped by adversity in three ways; after the passing of Gandalf he took charge as the leader, when Aragorn had the chance to take the ring from Frodo but overcame the temptation, and finally when Frodo and Sam separated from the group and Aragorn began the search for merry and pippin before anything terrible happened to them.
During the Journey through the Mines of Moria they were faced with many conflicts. When Aragorn and the others witnessed Gandalf fight the Balrog on the Bridge of Khazad-dum, Gandalf ended up being pulled off the bridge by the Balrog's whip. Adversity, it is some sort of obstacle put in front of you in life that you have to overcome. A good example of adversity is in a book written by author Theodore Taylor called The Cay. It is about a young white boy named Phillip and a black man named Timothy and they are in the middle of World War 2 with America, Australia, Curacao and Great Brittan against Germany. They want to leave Curacao so they get onto a ship that is taking them to Miami but it is bombed on the way. As a result of this Timothy and Phillip meet because they happen to get on the same raft that leads them to the small Cay. Some of the adversities that are overcome are dealing with Phillip going blind, being shipwrecked and prejudice. Getting along, working as a team and most importantly a friendship help overcome these adversities.…

The archetype of facing adversity is seen in both the Odyssey and the film E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial. In these texts, these challenges they face make it hard for them to reach their goal and finish their journey. In E.T., the scientists prevented E.T., the hero, from finishing his journey and going home. These scientists invaded Elliot, the helper’s, house. They set up a medical facility and block off Elliott and ET from the rest of the house. In this facility, ET “died”, but he comes back to life later in the movie. Similar to ET, Odysseus also faces a challenge that stops him from completing his journey. When Odysseus…

Moreover, both Frodo Baggins and Luke Skywalker, the archetypal heroes in The Fellowship of the Ring and the Star Wars trilogy, demonstrate the heroic quality of determination with Frodo when he finds his seed of courage then when he endures the wound of the Morgul blade and when he fights against those who underestimate him, and Luke shows determination when he trains with Obi Wan and then when he trains with Yoda and most importantly when Yoda dies. When Frodo finds the seed of courage within himself and when Luke trains with Obi Wan, the archetypal heroes exhibit their heroic characteristic of determination. Finding the seed of courage within himself, Frodo is able to exhibit the hero that is inside of him when fighting in the Barrow Downs…

Eventually, Bard found Smaug’s week spot and killed him. Smaug’s defeat resulted with the destruction of Lake-town. Bard managed to get the people to calm down, got some shelters built, and sent word for help to the elves. The war began as just the Dwarves versus the men and the elves. It later turned into a battle with the goblins and the wargs; the opposing sides joined up to fight the ultimate enemy. I will be talking about Gandalf’s role in the story and how he is like a father figure to Bilbo. The Hobbit was wrote by J. R. R. Tolkien. We first see Gandalf at the beginning of the story when he meets Bilbo at his hobbit hole. The first impression the story gives us about Gandalf is he is wise and every time he visits he tells adventourus stories. I think as I discuss diversity in the workplace by managers and professionals in a business setting I should start with what those differences are that make us diverse. Harvey and Allard (2012) write, “those differences certainly include temperament and personality, but also culture, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, ability, age, and size differences” (p. 3). It is very important for managers and supervisors in a business setting to understand how these differences in cultural affect communication among team members. Working as a nurse, I have witnessed physicians from other cultures…
