Feminism:

* Feminism is a social movement that has taken it’s discourse over the past hundred years. Feminist sociologists look at the inequalities between men and women in society. * Feminist sociologists believe that society is built on conflict – (disagreement) between men and women, they believe that men have all the power in society and that it is unfair towards women. * There is more than one type of feminism, although all believe that there is some issue of inequality between men and women, they have differing solution to the issue. * Liberal Feminism: they believe that men and women are becoming more equal. They believe that the inequality was created due to sexist laws and gender socialisation. They believe that the solution to rid society of sexist laws and, children should be socialised similarly. * Marxist Feminism: they believe that inequalities between men and women are due to capitalism in society. Women are used as free housewives and minders; bringing up the next generation of workers for the ruling class. They believe the solution is to move towards a more communist society where everybody (men and women) is treated equally as all wealth, property and assets be shared equally. * Radical Feminism: they believe that there are still big inequalities between men and women, and it’s due to society being patriarchal. They believe that the solution is separatism: where men and women live separately.

Marxism:

* Marxism is a social perspective that believes that there are huge inequalities between different classes in society. They believe that society is also built on conflict, however this conflict is between classes. * Marxists believe that the inequalities arise because of capitalism in society – where people want tot make as much money as possible. In order to do this, the ruling class exploit the working class e.g. by giving them low wages. * Marxists believe that the ruling class impose the idea that it is natural for the ruling class to be, above the working class in status, education and job opportunities.

Functionalists:

* Functionalist look at how and why society runs smoothly. * Unlike Feminists and Marxists, functionalists believe that society is built on consensus rather than conflict – which means we all agree on how to behave (norms) and what is right and wrong (values) * Functionalists believe that every part of society has a function to play in order to make society run smoothly. E.g. The education system prepares you for your role in the future.

New Rights: * New rights sociologists believe that the traditional roles have been undermined by the permissive values of the 1960s and 1970s. * They believe that the nuclear family is the bedrock of a smooth running society. Providing that the mother is the carer/nurturer and the father is the breadwinner. They believe that lone parent families – provide issues of concern towards society, as their children may become delinquents due to inadequate socialisation. * They believe that the welfare situation creates a dependency culture where people have created a different set of norms and values.

Post Modernism:

* Rejection that there is an absolute truth, * Rejection of the modernist movement of the 1960’s.

As a macro theory, Radical Feminist argued that being a woman is a positive thing but not approved in patriarchal society where women are oppressed. Women are seen as being exploited by men in a patriarchal society, so feminists argue that the solution to this is ought to be separatism. What is Feminism? According to the Webster Online Dictionary, feminism is the “belief in social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.” Feminist movements are formed to give these rights to women who have been deprived of their privileges and rights denied by society. In this essay, I will discuss feminism in America as a movement which aims to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression. According to bell hooks “the feminist movement is not about being anti-male, the movement is to clearly address the problem of sexism in society today” (hooks 2000: viii-ix). What Hooks meant by this statement is that the feminist movement is not a male-bashing movement, but a movement for us as Americans and worldwide to end unfair treatment of people because of their sex.…

Feminism is the equality of the sexes. Women are not as acknowledged as they ought to be because of men being in control. Men are viewed as leaders in the public eye due to being tough, yet women can be too. “A woman could be a philosopher only if she “thought like a man” (Meyers 1). Women do not have to cerebrate like men to get somewhere because they have the facility to do whatever they desire. They are in control of their own life; men should not be the ones to determine if women are capable of being a philosopher or anything. Women are not “irrational, emotional, unintelligent, and morally immature” (Meyers 1). They are individuals that work as hard as men to complete their employment and have jobs at home they need to do to care for their families. They are hardworking…

“Feminism is the radical notion that women are human beings,” as Cheris Kramarae once eloquently stated. Feminism strives to end sexism and to achieve equal rights for men and women. In America, it has been attributed to getting women the right to vote, being able to run for a political office, and demanding workplace rights. However, sexism is still extremely rampant in the country, especially in the workplace, and feminism is the only way to end it.…

Feminism is the theory that men and women should be equal, politically, economically, and socially. There are many different types of feminism and each have a profound impact on someone's view of society. The first is cultural feminism, which is the theory that there are fundamental personality differences between men and women, and that women's differences are special. This theory supports the idea that there are biological differences between men and women and sexism can be overcome by embracing the "women's way." The second type is individualist or libertarian feminist. This feminism is based upon libertarian philosophies, with the focus on autonomy, rights, liberty, independence, and diversity. Next, there is the radical feminism; this theory began approximately during the 1967 – 1975. This ideology focuses on social change, and "attempts to draw lines between biologically – determined behavior and culturally- determined behavior" in order to free both men and women as much as possible from their previous narrow gender roles. Finally, there is the Liberal Feminism, this theory focuses on the idea that all people are created equal and that education is the primary means to change discrimination. Groups in favor of this theory are the N.A.C. – the National Action Committee on the Status of Woman, an organization representing 500 feminist oriented women's groups, and the N.O.W. – the National Organization of Women. Both of these organizations and Feminism as a whole are and have been influential on the national government.…
