In the time and place Celie lived, it was rare to find a woman encompass herself into business, and it was frowned upon by society. Celie begins making pants for the people that she loves, but then becomes so fond of her hobby that she establishes a business centered on it, as suggested by Shug. Promptly after making her first pair of pants, Celie travels to Memphis with Shug, where she matures and acquaints herself with independence, craving for more, and that is when her business is born. Celie says, “I got pants now in every color and size under the sun. Since us started making pants down home, I ain’t been able to stop. I change the cloth, I change the print, I change the waist, I change the pocket. I change the hem, I change the fullness of the leg. I make so many pants Shug tease me. I didn’t know what I was starting, she say laughing” (Walker 211). Celie makes pants for both men and women. Each individual pair of pants that Celie creates reverberates a different identity of the person who she makes them for. Celie’s ability to design a new pair of pants for each new and individual person she meets signifies that Celie has grown and matured from her past.
