Stanford and University of California alumni Sandra Lim reads from The Wilderness on April 7, 2015, at Prairie Lights. As an alumna from the International Writing Program Lim was making her return back to Iowa City after 11 years. In The Wilderness Lim reads a collection of poems about love, spring and one poem that caught my attention was about the individual struggle of one's body within one’s mind. The poems are open to many interpretations but that is the way that I chose to interpret that poetry in particular. The interesting thing about Lim’s poem is how describes the body parts in some of her poems. It is very vague. It almost makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable but at the same time, I really like her style. The way she describes…

Women are powerful creatures, capable of causing change and hope in the midst of adversity. Heroines shine in the limelight, bringing attention to what is wrong and what needs to be done. However, we never hear about these women after that prominence rolls onto another. When the curtain falls to allow a new play to begin in her place; we get up from our seats and leave popcorn buckets behind, leaving her alone. The feminist movement has exploded over the last century and Zora Hurston’s book entitled Their Eyes Were Watching God has contributed to the cause. Presented during a time where it was believed that women having any power went against the norms of society, the book shines a light on main character Janie Crawford. The complex character’s quest to find her voice and her identity in a period where women’s duties were only in the home because they were valued as less superior to men. The argument was that if women were to receive the same rights and privileges allotted to their male counterparts, chivalry would end forever.…

“Feminist criticism derives from a critique of a history of oppression, in this case the history of women’s inequality” (Mays 2347). Women have always been second to men in mostly everything they are competing in. Even if the man and woman have the exact same job, the man is probably making more money just because he is a man. Women barely got the chance to vote less than fifty years ago! Women still have a long way to go to catch up where the men are, because men have always had a say in how to do things, and the woman would just agree about what he had said. Feminist are here to change all of that though. With protests showing women are equally compatible to do the same thing as men can do. “One of the first disciplines…

    Medea Feminist Analysis

Medea sits in her room all day sobbing loudly for the world to hear. She screams and cries as to capture everyone’s attention. As abnormal as it seems, the readers of Euripides’ Medea witnesses this scene at the beginning of the book. The Nurse and Chorus continually speak about the hardships Medea is going through, and tend to feel sorry for her. Euripides emphasizes the point that Medea is going through extreme pain internally with the thought and actions of her killing her own children. [Some may say that Medea is not sympathized with because she is full of so much grief, and her being a witch, is expected to do unexpected things.] However, readers can see that Euripides does sympathize with her because of the repetition of the Nurse and Chorus’s pity, as well as Medea’s own feelings. Throughout Euripides’s Medea, the Nurse and Chorus foreshadow Medea’s evil actions followed by their attempt at trying to stop and…

QUESTION: Texts often represent women as victims in a patriarchal society. How are women represented in two of the poems set for study?During the late 20th Century women remained constrained by gender ideals which they were expected to conform to; subservience, piety and beauty. This domineering state of inferiority experienced by these women is expressed and challenged by both Mary Elizabeth Coleridge and Amy Lowell through their exploration of the victimisation of women in a patriarchal society.. The underlying desire for freedom, which the poets Coleridge and Lowell illustrate in their respective poems The Other Side of the Mirror and Patterns, brings awareness to the repressive and harsh environment women have previously been brought up in.…

Medea displays several characteristics of feminism by giving power to a woman. Medea’s husband, Jason, has married another woman. Then, Creon banishes Medea and her two sons from Corinth. However, she is not the kind of woman who sits back and weeps when betrayed, but rather plans revenge, finding a way to kill them all. She does not feel the need to lower her self-worth in comparison to that of a man's and within this, are the signs of feminism. Through the school of feminist criticism and analysis, Medea suggests that women do not see themselves in stereotypical constructed roles and responsibilities.…

The first wave of feminism began during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Feminists were fighting for women’s right to vote. This first wave of feminism involved a wide range of women who were more moderate and conservative rather than revolutionary or radical. These women fought for their rights, but they did it with in the law. They were willing to work within the political system and they knew the purpose of this movement wasn’t to start wars or disrupt the social roles they were given. The reason these women pushed so hard for this movement was to achieve their goal of achieving a more equal social role to men. In 1860, New York helped out feminists by passing a revised Married Woman’s Property Act, which gave women shared ownership of their children, allowing them to have a say in their children’s wills, wages, and granting them the right to inherit any property they wish to give their children. As this first wave continued, of course advances and setbacks were made within New York and other states. Thankfully, with each new win the feminists used them as ways to advance and prove that it was time for change and…

All women have a place. That is barefoot, pregnant, and chained to the stove. Ideas like this are what started the feminist movement. Women desired to be judged by their worth as a person rather than their physical appearance or biological factors. Women sought out social, economic, and political equality. Many women wanted to do their part to support the cause. Some of the most notable influences of the feminist movement were poets such as Sylvia Plath, Lucille Clifton and Anne Sexton. Through their poems, the truth was exposed. This encouraged women everywhere to demand justice and equality.…
