The main theme in this book is feminism, which is a movement to put an end on sexism, sexist exploitations, and oppression. Throughout the chapters, Hooks, protests against the anti-feminist movement because they have been misguided by patriarchal mass media spreading lies that males are not welcomed by feminists. The patriarchal mass media tends to focus more on the feminists who are anti-male and depict a picture to everyone else that feminist are anti-male as well. This is not the case according to Hooks, a prominent writer about popular feminist theory and cultural criticism. She examines how the feminist movement branched into two different groups; the reformist thinkers and the revolutionary thinkers. Reformist thinkers tended to fight more for gender equality especially in the work force which was a quicker endeavor. A major problem with this group is that they do not practice equality among other females when pertaining to race or class. The latter wanted to transform the entire social system in order to bring an end to patriarchy and sexism all together regardless of class or race. In the end the reformist won out by convincing the government for equal pay between men and women but failed in putting an end to sexism. Visionary Feminists is a women's liberation movement whom aimed at creating strategies to change the lot of all women and enhance their personal power.
Today several women desire civil rights without feminism. "They want the system of patriarchy to remain intact in the private sphere even as they desire equality in the public sphere. But Visionary feminist thinkers have understood from the beginning that cooperation with patriarchy, even patriarchal support of some aspects of feminist movement(i.e. the demand for women to work), will leave females vulnerable" (page, 114). Visionary Feminists, they believe that in order to cultivate a feminist critical consciousness we need to move way beyond equal rights agendas and start with basic issues like literacy campaigns that would embrace all women, but especially women of poorer groups. While visionary feminist thinkers have understood the need for a broad-based feminist movement, one that addresses the needs of girls and boys, women and men, across class, there is no body of visionary feminist theory written in an accessible language or shared through oral communication. By helping to educate others in scholastic environment in support of feministic education while theories written in a more accessible language can extremely help in cultivating a feminist critical consciousness. Hook's message is useful because she help us become more aware of how sexism and racism plagues our society. Most of us hold on to the misguided assumption that gender is the sole factor determining our own status. What Hook's message attempts to do is help us break through this denial in order to assist women to face the way biases of race and class that had led to the formation of a women's movement that was not mass-based.
