Feminism vs. “Meninism” In 2015, “It was just a joke,” is most commonly used among social media disputations. We are told not to take it seriously and to laugh it off because they’re not targeted towards us personally; and yet they degrade our gender as well as their own in every sort of way. Feminism simply means, “The advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.” Being a woman and/or being part of the LGBTQ+ community it is difficult and terrifying to be a part of in this generation. I am so fortunate to be writing this assignment and honestly being able to voice my opinions and emotions towards both Feminism and Meninism. Throughout the many years, Feminism has become more popular and
positive but is still looked at as “women who complain about their problems.” Many people don’t know the difference between of what a Feminist is, and what a Misandrist is. Before getting into an altercation with someone it is best to educate them on their understanding of the two. Now, “Meninists” mock Feminists and all their beliefs because “it’s just a joke!” All you constantly hear is snotty remarks and how they can’t stand to hear Feminists bicker that they don’t have the same equality and/or the same rights as men. “Did you know over 60 million girls worldwide are child brides, married before the age of 18?” I speak so passionately about this topic because it is so important; and people still tend to be close-minded and not fully understand what happens in other countries, or tend to care. “Did you know 603 million women live in countries where domestic violence is not yet considered a crime?” Or that men are victims of nearly 3 million physical assaults in the U.S? Feminism speaks out on “Men’s Rights” issues such as, domestic violence, sexual assault, false accusation of rape, labeled as weak for expressing any emotion, etc. Feminism is a social movement devoted towards creating equal rights amongst all sexes, races, genders, and ethnicities. Have you ever heard of the term, “Cat calling?” Cat calling is the most common altercation to lead into assault. 72% of cat calls happen when women are alone. By making an invalid argument saying how, “women shouldn’t go out alone then!” By saying this you’re implying that women shouldn’t live, we should always be on the lookout if that’s how it’s going to be right? Wrong! Misogynist’s a.k.a Meninists feel as if women want to take away their masculinity. We say “we want equality for women” they hear, “we want to empower men!” That is just not the case; how are we supposed to help gain equality for all when human decency is considered so heroic and brave. You are mocking the victims of sexual assault as you joke around making sarcastic remarks about how a woman deserves to be treated less than man because of her clothing. In many countries spousal rape has not even been criminalized. In Afghanistan, girls are often taken out of school when they hit puberty. About only 18 percent of women between 15 and 24 can read. When you justify their actions it only leads to a stronger, patriarchal society.
