A very famous test that is conducted on novels and books is called the Bechdel Test, which looks at whether there two female character and whether they talk or not. If they do, do they talk about something other then a man? In Fifty Shades of Grey there are two female characters Anastasia Steele and Katherine Kavanagh, they are two best friends who live together. A typical conversation between these two would go as so, “Mostly he was courteous, formal, slightly stuffy – like he’s old before his time. He doesn’t talk like a man of twenty-something. How old is he anyway? P.15” Due to the lack of conversation about other things then men, it fails the Bechdel Test. This is not a bad thing, but failing shows a lack of female empowerment and female characters are unnoticed. When this happens the focus shifts to only men, and that women are only meant to praise men and make them see like they are the main focus
