“Maybe I came into the world backwards, I don’t know. But… you born with two strikes on you before you come to the plate...You can afford a call strike. If you going down… you going down swinging.”(Act Two Scene One). When Troy says this, he refers to the life he began with before he started a family with Rose. Troy’s mother left him and his father had never showed any affection towards him throughout his childhood. The way Troy’s parents …show more content…
raised him greatly affected how he treats his own family. As a result of poor parenting he has an unhealthy relationship with his own sons. Troy hardly acknowledges Lyons, but on the other hand he is always on Cory’s back. He is always pressuring Cory and discourages him from any opportunities he receives. Rose is a supportive housewife and a wonderful mother to her children. Unfortunately Troy takes it all for granted. Troy was brought up to solely financially support his family without having to go out of his way to have any emotional connections, and because of this weakness, this leads to one of his major tragic flaws in the play.
Troy’s affair with Alberta jeopardizes his marriage with Rose and starts to fall apart.
He was at absolute fault because he didn’t appreciate Rose. Troy’s actions and intentions were greedy. “It’s just… she gives me a different idea… a different understanding about myself. I can step out of this house and get away from the pressures and problems… be a different man.”(Act 2 Scene1). Troy explains to Rose that their marriage has come to a halt and hasn’t progressed for many years. When Troy was spending time with Alberta he felt that he didn’t have to carry the stress of bills or the worry of constantly repairing on his shoulders. On the other hand Rose has always stood by Troy’s side for eighteen years and supported him in every way she could. Troy was selfish and only thought of himself when in the meantime Rose had dreams too. She also wanted to take a day to herself when she didn’t have to constantly worry about her responsibilities. The affair was a betrayal to Rose and all of the effort that she invested into their marriage was
wasted.
