“Fenimore Cooper’s Literary Offenses”

Mark Twain critics Fenimore Cooper’s Deerslayer tale in his essay, “Fenimore Cooper’s Literary Offenses.” Twain’s essay gives a litany of literary offenses in which Fenimore Cooper commits in his work. This passage describes the inaccuracy in Cooper’s writing and his Indian story. Through his use of ad hominem, rhetorical questions and a mocking tone, Mark Twain manifests his critical attitude towards Cooper and his inaccurate writing. This piece is certainly an ad hominem, for it attacks not solely Coopers witting, but Cooper’s abilities as an observer himself. In paragraph 1, Twain says, “Cooper’s eye was splendidly inaccurate. Cooper seldom saw anything correctly. He saw nearly all things as through a glass eye, darkly.” Mark Twain has simply nothing nice or positive to say about Cooper. After completely negating all of Cooper’s Indian story, Twain says, “This scow episode is really a sublime burst of invention; but it doesn’t not thrill, because the inaccuracy of details throw a sort of air of fictitiousness and general improbability over it. This comes from Cooper’s inadequacy as observer.” Twain draws the the reader in with a quick bit of positive lingo when he says the writing is a “sublime burst of invention,” but then he immediately contradicts his words and proposes that the whole story is illogical. Twain also claims that he is simply “no architect” because the construction of his house is fallacious.
Later in paragraph 2 of this excerpt, Twain asks rhetorical questions to further his point and engage the reader in his thinking. He asks, “Did the Indians notice that there was going to be a tight squeeze? Did they notice that they could make money by climbing down out of that arched sapling and just stepping aboard when the ark scraped by?” He simply asks these to prove the obliviousness of Cooper’s Indians and furthermore, the obliviousness of Cooper.     Twain is able to expose the selfishness in Southern society during the nineteenth century using several examples of satire and irony. During Huck’s journey along the Mississippi River, he comes across two lying and scheming “rapscallions” (153). The most infamous occurrence with the Duke and the King is when they scam the mourning Wilks family for Peter’s fortune. The mere thirst for money is enough to drive the scam artists to commit a heartless and guiltless act, one that takes advantage of the helpless and grieving. It was one that, according to Huck, was “enough to make a body ashamed of the human race” (162). Through pathos and satire in the Wilks scam, Twain displays the selfishness and greediness of Southern society as a whole. Twain, a realist and a humorist, also demonstrates human selfishness when Huck asks several men to help his family on the raft. When Huck mentions that his father is sick, they say, “we are right down sorry for you,” but they are more concerned with their well-being (90). Ironically, Huck had known that the men would refuse to step foot on the raft, causing them to offer money instead.     However, the novel was not a merely a basic story, it was a powerful mean of political propaganda, and had Twain left out what makes the book so controversial, the significance of said propaganda would have completely fallen flat, as there would have been no controversy to carry it. An example of anti- religious propaganda from the book would be: “When we got back to the raft and he come to count up he found he had collected eighty-seven dollars and seventy-five cents. And then he had fetched away a three-gallon jug of whisky, too, that he found under a wagon when he was starting home through the woods. The king said, take it all around, it laid over any day he’d ever put in in the missionarying line. He said it warn’t no use talking, heathens don’t amount to shucks alongside of pirates to work a camp-meeting with” (Twain 129). This shows Twain’s mockery of the religious, and how they are fooled into giving an obvious con-man (at least from Huck’s perspective) money. This is also satirical because it the King is an apparent con artist to the reader, but the devout Christians can barely look beyond the religious veil that covers their eyes. During the 1840s, religion was thought to make one see the world clearer, so satire is played out by this. His abolition propaganda is demonstrated when Aunt Sally asked Huck if he was late because his boat had grounded. He responded with, “It warn’t the grounding—that didn’t keep us back but a little. We blowed out a cylinder-head.” Aunt Sally said, “Good gracious! anybody hurt?” Huck replied, “No’m.     In Jane Smiley’s essay titled, “Say It Ain’t So, Huck”, she thoroughly criticizes Twain and his novel. Throughout her essay, Smiley carries a skeptical and judgmental tone. Her first argument is that the last twelve chapters of the book was a complete “failure”. She supports this, by quoting Leo Marx who stated that, “In the closing episode, however, we lose sight of Jim in the maze of farcical invention.” The problem that Smiley and Marx have (and that “many readers sense intuitively), is that the novel strayed from its central focus, the relationship between Huck and Jim. She claims that because Twain did not really know the actual meaning of racism, the novel had no deep meaning. However, Smiley’s argument could not be more inaccurate.
