Ferdinand Magellan was born in Sabrosa, Portugal in 1480. Magellan is a very prolific and successful explorer that was dedicated to his craft. Ferdinand had a passion for exploration from a young age, and was determined to become a great explorer, which he definitely accomplished.
Ever since he was a young lad, Magellan was interested in navigation and exploration. At age 10, Ferdinand’s parents passed away and in the same year he became a page for the queen. Ferdinand studied mapmaking, celestial navigation, cartography, and astronomy at Queen Leonora’s School of Pages in Lisbon. Ferdinand was maimed and walked with a limp. On top of the wound, Magellan was wrongly accused of illegal trade and even in spite of all he had done for his country, offers of employment were banned. Four years later, in 1527, Ferdinand moved to Seville in Spain to bring his passion somewhere else. Magellan knew from Greek texts that the earth was not flat, but round. He found a route that would enable him to get to the Spice Islands faster by sailing west. Vasco Nunez de Balboa and Christopher Columbus had already developed ideas that were similar, but the concept would allow the Spanish contact with the Spice Islands without having to travel across territories controlled by the Portuguese.
Finally on September 20, 1519, Magellan set out with a fleet of five ships, which were barely enough to sail the distance that he wanted to go. The five ships sailed past South America and then a ship was wrecked, but in spite of the hinderance, the expedition continued. By October, the fleet made contact with what is now called the “Strait of Magellan.” Within the month it took for them to endure the strait one of the ships captains left the crew and sailed home.
