Introduction
More than two decades after ousted President Ferdinand Marcos died in exile, the issue of the former leader's burial remains unresolved and continues to be a divisive issue in the Philippines. Marcos died in 1989 in Hawaii. His body, which was brought back to the Philippines in 1993, is now on display inside a glass box in an air-conditioned crypt in the family's ancestral home in Batac, Ilocos Norte Province, North of Manila. The Marcos family, pleading for an "honorable burial," has lobbied the government that Marcos's waxed remains be interred at the heroes' cemetery in Manila where the nation's veterans and soldiers lie to rest. Statement of the Problem A Catholic archbishop has opposed calls to allow the burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos at the Heroes’ Cemetery. Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Anthonio Ledesma said many Filipinos will not allow such idea especially those victims of human rights violations under the Marcos dictatorship. “I’m a Filipino citizen and I’m against it. We know how massive the human rights abuses during the Marcos regime,” Ledesma said. The prelate was reacting to a congressional proposal to allow Marcos to be buried at the Heroes’ Cemetery in an interview over Radyo Veritas Thursday.
