Founded by Salvatore Ferragamo, Ferragamo is a world leader among fashion brands for its quality and craftsmanship. The brand is also one of the pioneers to become publically recognized as fashion “made in Italy” during the1920s. Today, the brand name of Salvatore Ferragamo is associated with the words glamour and luxury. But it is important to remember that the man who founded this global luxury empire was also just a shoemaker. Self-dubbed “Shoemaker of Dreams” in his autobiography, Salvatore Ferragamo was also a dreamer and visionary. These visions became his inspiration for the 20,000 models of shoes and around 350 patents created by him during his lifetime. He had a natural talent for shoemaking. But in addition to this talent and a little bit of luck, the greater majority of his success was the hard work and passion that the man put into his work.
Early Beginnings
Salvatore Ferragamo is a man of humble beginnings. He was born in 1898 as the eleventh of fourteen children to a family of poor farmers in Bonito, Italy. His first shoes were made for his younger sisters, his own creation made out of cardboard and fabric scraps because his family could not afford to own two pairs of white shoes for the girls’ first communion. The triumph of this experiment was an early manifestation of his talent. This talent controlled the instincts to play of a young boy at only nine years old and begin pursing the craft of shoemaking with the local cobbler. It did not take long for Salvatore Ferragamo to surpass his instructor in Bonito, and he moved on to Naples in pursuit of shoemaking knowledge.
At the age of twelve, Salvatore Ferragamo returned to his home town and opened up his own shoe shop. The boy was ridiculed for this attempt by the locals because of his young age.
