1. The “Land between 2 rivers” is the Tigris and Euphrates rivers located in Mesopotamia (in the Fertile Crescent). “The World’s first cities arose in Mesopotamia, ‘the land between the streams,’ the name given to the area between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers… (24, Standage)”, which meant that around this area most of the people were hardworking. The problem about these two rivers though is that they had unexpected flooding and there was little rain. This is why at the time, goods, instead of being offerings to gods were, “compulsory taxes that were consumed by the temple bureaucracy or traded for other goods and services (40, Standage).” This only arose though because of the unpredictable weather and nature of the Mesopotamian environment.…

The Fertile Crescent was the first area to develop agriculture. It was the first to harness the power of agriculture because of geographic luck. Geographic luck is the fact that where a civilization was on the earth relates to how well the civilization did in becoming a supreme power on the earth. If the civilization was started near a place heavy with crops highly nutritious, then it did well. If it did not have nutritious crops, then it did not do as well as some other civilizations. Geography also related to what animals they domesticated.…
In Southwest Asia, also commonly known as the Middle East, it is known mostly for its dry desert climate, except for in the region located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers where the flat plain known as Mesopotamia is located. This region’s shape and the richness of its soil leads is also the reason it is called the Fertile Crescent. The rivers flood once a year leaving a thick bed of mud called silt. This rich soil silt attracted its first settlers to this region the Sumerians. Even though this rich soil drew people to the region there were…

People from around the world immigrate to the United States in hopes of finding the Promised Land. Some may define the promise land, as a land of freedom, a land of abundance, a land of peace, or a land of education. Most define it as a land of opportunity for a better life. America is a land full of culture and diversity, although it is notoriously difficult to characterize “American” culture. Is it possible to move to a land such as America, full of culture and diversity, and yet preserve your own traditions and cultural identity? Some believe this to be very difficult to do, due to materialism, beliefs and language barriers. The counter argument would be that Americans are open to new cultural experiences, are welcome to newcomers, and are willing to help give support. I believe that it would be difficult to move to America, try to find your place in materialistic culture while preserving your own culture and beliefs while learning a new language.…

Each author brought a new perspective and thought process to the western experience which either contradicted Turner or supported his theories. Where did these ancient civilizations form? Ancient Egypt formed along the nile river. The nile provided water and fertile ground for the people of Egypt. The river flooded in a consistent pattern which made it easier for growing crops. Due to the surrounding desert the people of ancient egypt had to live within fifty miles of the river. The rest of the area was uninhabitable due to no water. The ancient civilization of Mesopotamia formed between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The rivers were again a major part of the civilization due to the water needed for crops. These rivers however were…
