Deviance is not usually a crime, but may be seen as one. Deviance is when someone breaks the norms and values of a society, but the act is not illegal. Crime is where a person beaks the law of land, they either do something they shouldn’t, or they don’t do something they should. Crime and deviance can be measured with the use of Official Crime Statistic (OCS). OCS is the crimes which are reported by the victim, and then further recorded by the Police. Not all crimes are recorded by the Police, which lead to a dark figure in the overall collected OCS. To avoid dark figures there are other methods to measure crime and deviance.…

Pesach, more commonly referred to as Passover, is the most commonly observed Jewish holy day. According to the 1990 National Jewish Population Survey, eighty percent of Jews have attended a Pesach Seder, a traditional meal eaten to celebrate the holy day. Passover, also referred to as “the Spring Festival,” “the Festival of Matzah” or “the Time of Our Freedom,” is a celebration held to commemorate the Israelites deliverance out of slavery in Egypt (Rich, T.). It is a time for all Jewish people to remember their ancestors and the trust and faith they had in God that led them to freedom. The celebration of Passover dates back thousands of years, is still observed today, and has significant parallels to an important Christian feast day, Easter.…

In the novel, “Moby Dick” by Herman Melville, Flask is the lowest officer rank on the ship and he is oppressed by his fellow officers. It is shown in chapter thirty-four: “The Cabin Table”. “And poor little Flask, he was the youngest son, and little boy of this weary family party. His were the shinbones of the saline beef; his would have been the drumsticks” (Melville 143). This is the first part that shows Flask is at the bottom of the food chain. Flask is the one to get the scraps and undesired pieces of meat, while Ahab, Starbuck and Stubb get thighs and breasts. He is the last one served on top of getting the least amount of food out of everyone else. This shows Flask is oppressed by his fellow officers because he isn’t treated with the same respect of the first and second in command behind Ahab.…

Christmas is probably the most note able of all these. Not only is it observed by the Christians but it has become so ingrained in modern American society it is expected by all to receive a "Christmas break" in late December. Employers often give a Christmas bonus around the time to all of their employees, regardless of religious beliefs. The year's most noted holiday is celebrated on December 25th, both in homes and churches worldwide. The meaning for Christmas is to celebrate the birth of their Messiah, Jesus Christ. During the fourth century the Bishop of Rome set December 25th as Christ's birth date, though the exact birth date is note known. Some authorities claim that the choice of December 25th was made because it coincided with Chanukah, Mithraic's feast of the sun god, and the people of northern Europe's winter solstice feast. The winter solstice is the time of year in the Northern Hemisphere when the noon sun appears to be farthest south. Modern scholars believe Christ was actually born sometime in the spring, based upon data gathered from a roman census.…

Even though I do not attend church on a regular basis, I do still observe the tradition of not eating meat on Fridays during Lent and eating only one full meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Some Catholics still observe Lent by not eating meat during the full forty days. The purpose of Lent is to be a season of fasting, self-denial, Christian growth, penitence, and simplicity. Lent is the 40-day season before Easter, not including Sundays, lasting from Ash Wednesday until the end of the Holy Week. Shrove Tuesday, also known as Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras, is typically a celebration for many as Catholics feel it is their last day to party until Easter. Ash Wednesday is the first day of the penitential season of Lent. Some traditions of Ash Wednesday are fasting and placing ashes on your forehead. The Holy Week is the last week of Lent before Easter, which begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Holy Saturday. Palm Sunday is the sixth Sunday of Lent where we commemorate Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. Holy Thursday, also known as Mundane Thursday, celebrates Jesus' institution of the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Ordination. Good Friday is a fast day of the Church commemorating Jesus' crucifixion and death. Fasting on Good Friday means eating only one full meatless meal on this day. A person may still eat breakfast and lunch as long as the two meals don't add up to a second full meal. Snacking is not allowed during fast days but drinking liquids such as coffee and…

    Christian Holidays

Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus. The English term Christmas (“mass on Christ’s day”) is of fairly recent origin. The earlier term Yule may have derived from the Germanic jōl or the Anglo-Saxon geōl, which referred to the feast of the winter solstice. The corresponding terms in other languages—Navidad in Spanish, Natale in Italian, Noël in French—all probably denote nativity. The German word Weihnachten denotes “hallowed night.” Since the early 20th century, Christmas has also been a secular family holiday, observed by Christians and non-Christians alike, devoid of Christian elements, and marked by an increasingly elaborate exchange of gifts. In this secular Christmas celebration, a mythical figure named Santa Claus plays the pivotal role.…
