Fetal Pig Dissection: Respiratory and Digestive Systems
Organs
Functions
Salivary Glands
-Three pairs of exocrine glands in the mouth that secrete saliva; the parotid, submandibular (sub maxillary), and sublingual glands The parotid is the largest and most easily visible of all the salivary glands. The sunbmaxillary is bean shaped and located under the bigger parotid gland. The submandibular gland lies near the jaw line.
Glottis
-The opening between the vocal cords at the upper part of the larynx. The epiglottis is what covers the glottis during swallowing, to block food/water form getting in the trachea.
Epiglottis
-The function of the epiglottis in a pig is to prevent food from going into the trachea. Epiglottis is attached to the entrance of the larynx and is made of elastic cartilage. The epiglottis projects up through the soft palate into a region called the nasopharynx

During the pharyngeal stage of swallowing, it was observed that the patient exhibits reduced hyoid elevation, reduced airway protection, and reduced passive movement of the epiglottis. The patient had a total of three swallows. It was observed during the first swallow that there was a delayed timing of laryngeal elevation. The delayed timing of laryngeal elevation also caused a delay in epiglottic movement. In a typical swallow, the epiglottis folds down to protect the airway. However, the epiglottis did not fold down completely when the patient completed the second swallow. It was also observed that…

Oral Cavity: The pig has a hard palate, located at the roof of the mouth, used to aid the process of breaking down food. It has teeth that are pointed and sharp so that it can tear its food to be digested. The tongue obviously allows for taste and also helps to direct the chewed food to the esophagus, which connects to the digestive system. The epiglottis is a small flap that covers the…

It's a muscular funnel divided into three parts nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx (Respiratory System 4). It's main function is to pass inhaled air to the next parts in the respiratory tract from the nasal cavity, this is why it is shaped as a funnel so that the expected air is delivered properly. Next, before the air descends to the trachea it interacts which a flap of connective tissue called the epiglottis. The epiglottis closes the opening to the esophagus to prevent air passing into the stomach, then it closes the opening to the trachea during swallowing to prevent aspiration. It's shape as a flap is due it needing to cover different pathways.…
