Ultrasound technicians, or sonographers, generate diagnostic images for physicians through the use of high-pitched sound waves. These ultrasonic frequencies are affected by the density of the tissues they 're travelling through, and computer processors inside the ultrasound unit interpret the echoes to create a visual image of the tissues. Sonography is one of the highest-paid professions open to those without a bachelor 's degree.…
Electronic monitoring of UCs can be done internally by using an intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC). It is inserted into the uterine cavity through the cervical os. It reflects the pressure inside the uterine cavity. As the pressure changes, it traces on the graph paper. The IUPC can measure the resting tone of the uterus between contractions, referred to as intensity. An advantage of an IUPC is that it provides a near-exact pressure measurement for contraction intensity and uterine resting tone. The sensitivity of the IUPC allows for very accurate timing of UCs, thus making it extremely useful when closer uterine…
Medical Sonography has become increasingly competitive, and while most programs are offered at open enrollment two year institutions, the programs themselves have specific admissions requirements that must be met. According to Southwestern Community College’s 2013-2014 academic catalog, the first steps in the admissions process to the Medical Sonography program are as follows:…
Fetal surgeons perform a laparotomy (an incision across the mother’s abdomen), the uterus is opened and the baby’s back is rotated into view. A pediatric neurosurgeon removes the MMC sac, if one is present, and closes skin over the defect to protect the spinal cord from exposure to the amniotic fluid. The uterus and the abdominal incision are then closed. A maternal-fetal medicine specialist performs sterile intraoperative ultrasound to map the position of the placenta and the fetus, and a fetal cardiologist uses echocardiography (ultrasound to assess the fetal heart) to examine fetal heart function during the surgery. These measures are used to ensure the utmost maternal and fetal safety. (“The Children’s Hospital of…
Sonography is the use of sound waves to generate an image for the diagnosis of medical conditions. Sonography is rapidly growing due to the harmful effects of x-rays and such. The most common use of sonography is associated with pregnancy, but can be used for many other things throughout the body. There are many different types of diagnostic medical sonographers, including but not limited to, obsteric sonography, abdominal sonography, neurosonography, or breast sonography.…
As it evolves it will be used instead of exams that are invasive and expensive. To Health insurance companies support the use of ultrasound rather than other procedures that involve radiation (Diagnostic). Diagnostic medical sonography is expected to “see significant growth over the coming years,” according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (5). Employment is expected to rise 43.5 percent from 2012 to 2020 (Five). More growth in sonography is going to stem from the effects of the Affordable Care Act due to changes to healthcare requirements during pregnancy requiring a greater use of ultrasound. A great reason to become a sonographer is because of changes to the healthcare industry (Five). Ultrasounds are much cheaper in comparison to similar…
Normally, when people think of nurse who are not familiar with health care careers, think of someone who takes care of the elderly or with adults in the hospital. What many people don’t know that there are several different kinds of nurses in the medical field. Personally, I would love to be a neonatal nurse.…
Isolation is considered the fear of loneliness and the struggle of fighting your own mind as it continues to strengthen the bottled emotions. In the novel,Of Mice and Men,George and Lennie go to a ranch. They meet a lot of people as continue working there. As the story progresses he shows isolation in three different ways to give you insight on how people were treated if they weren’t white, young,or a man.In the novel John Steinbeck gives examples of isolation and how it’s affected them.…
The benefit verses the effect of fetal Magnetic Resonance Imaging has been a controversial subject for years. Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a helpful tool for diagnosis of many diseases and abnormalities, but is it actually harmful to the fetus? Do the benefits of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging outweigh the risks? Ultrasound is the mostly commonly used imaging used in pregnancy, but in certain cases using fetal Magnetic Resonance Imaging in conjunction with ultrasound is very beneficial in planning and strategizing care for the fetus. Magnetic Resonance Imaging has been proven to help to better characterize mass, show location and extension of the lesion, and to show more detail in certain conditions.…
“According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of diagnostic medical sonographers should grow faster than average for all occupations through 2016” (The Top 100: The Fastest-Growing Careers for the 21st Century 130). The field of ultrasound imaging is growing rapidly, and, consequently, the demand for certified professionals. My genuine pursuit of a career as an ultrasound technologist only began recently, which is why I returned to Delta College. I wanted a career that suited my skill set, while also challenging me, and allowing me to be of service to other people. I enjoy studying the different fields of science, and the medical field has always intrigued me. After a little research, I chose to become an ultrasound technologist. The research for this paper has only affirm my decision and presented me with a better perspective of my future career. The main sources I used to do my research are: Delta College Career Center, Kaiser Permanente School of Allied Health Sciences Pamphlet, Diane Feneck’s transfer presentation, and my interview with Tiffany Kamerer, an ultrasound technician at Lodi Memorial Hospital.…
As a sonographer at Chelsea and Westminster hospital, I undertake and report obstetrics, gynaecology, abdominal, and paediatric ultrasound examinations. Within obstetrics I perform all routine examinations required by the maternity department, including early pregnancy, nuchal translucency, anomaly and growth scans. I have helped the team in the development of Obstetric ultrasound departmental…
