FLOW OF GOODS AND SERVICES FOR EDNA’S FOOTWEAR

Edna’s Footwear in Liliw, Laguna consists of individuals who own productive resources used in making shoes. These include raw materials for shoemaking such as coconut husks and rubber. Also utilized are land, knowledge in shoemaking and the capital used to fund the shoemaking business. These resources are used as factor inputs in the production process. The interaction of the household and the input market begins when the mentioned factor inputs are offered to the input market. By then, Edna’s Footwear will buy the land, hire factory workers, gain capital from past employment, and the raw materials are bought as well to be used for the production of the shoes. The firm is where the production of the shoes takes place. The goods (shoes) are then brought to the output market and sold to the public. After being sold, the goods are consumed by the members of the household and the cycle goes back to the first step and repeats again.

Money also travels around the circular flow of goods and services in Edna’s Footwear. Once the household members consume Edna’s Footwear’s products, the money is given to the output market. Revenue is generated for the firm once the money is brought to the firm from the output market. The firm’s revenue is then allocated to various factor payments such as wages, rent, interest and profit to the input market. The input market then gives its factor income to household members who are given their income so that they will be able to consume products found in the market once again. Thus, the cycle repeats once again.

This case analysis will focus on the issues surround the lifestyle product company Holey Soles. Psychologist Ann Rosenberg founded the company in September 2002. She initially operated in her garage and backyard, until she recruited Joyce Groote (now current CEO of Holey Soles) and expanded the company into other parts of North America. Holey Soles focuses on creating innovative footwear made from their trademarked technology SmartCel and SoleTek, which is an injection-molded foam technology. As of July 2007, sales had grown at 300% in each of the last two years and the company was ranked number four in the 2006 Profit magazine ranking of Canada’s Emerging Growth Companies. However as they continue to operate, they find themselves getting pushed back by their number one competitor, Crocs. By mid-2007, Crocs sales were 33 times the sales of Holey Soles. Holey Soles has a revenue target of $40 million by 2009, and to achieve this target, they will need to focus on the issues surrounding their company and hindering its growth. We have decided that the core issue surround the company is how to reach the goal of $40 million. They need to address the possible alternatives of either expanding into other products besides footwear, implementing a more aggressive marketing strategy, changing their 2-year goals completely, or maintaining the status quo. These alternatives will depend on the assessment of the time frame, cost, and current and potential competition. Upon analyzing all situations and alternatives, we have decided that the best solution for Holey Soles would be to expand the company by creating other product lines made form their trademarked technology. Only through this method will they be able to generate enough revenue to meet their $40 million goal.…

To explain the inner and outer flows of a closed economic system one must first remember that foreign agents are not included in this model. In this particular model the business would pay wages and rents to the household and in return the household would provide the business with land, labor, and capital. The household also pays the business money in exchange for goods and services.…

In a market system, competition is the driving force or the mechanism of control in the market economy. This allows firms to seek alternative technique and use the lowest-cost of production to produce goods and services. On the other hand, command system is like a one way street where the government is the central planner. It does not create room for products improvement, limited goods are produced, and no competition. The market system allows the invisible hand to coordinate the resources of household and business. Another interesting concept is the Circular Flow Model of the dynamics of market economy. This model explains how resources flow from households to businesses through the resources market, and how businesses sell products to households through the product market. In addition, monetary flows or a real flow is counterclockwise of the circular flow model where households receive income or wages from businesses through the resource market, and in return, businesses input their expenditures into producing goods or services and receive revenue from households through products market (McConnell, Brue & Flynn, 2009).…

According to the relatively high demand for winter boots during 1997, Canadian products failed to meet the demand, since majority of people were seeking for imported products. Although Canadian dollar at a low value could speed up the exports, raw materials imported to Canada increased prices, especially footwear. Since leather products such as designer handbags, carry-on luggage, shoes, boots; etc. are currently considered luxury goods; there is an increasing demand for owning them. Canada’s Leather Industry should be aware of the current trend and try to produce leather goods in a way to meet the demand and catch up with today’s fashion. In addition, employees who work for leather production should be paid fairly in order to be more productive so they can reach the maximum capacity of manufacturing leather…
