I put politics as my number one because it was frequently talked about throughout the book, about people are leaving Havana to get away from the dictatorship. A scene that proves that politics is number one is page 17 which is about the people of Cuba are rebelling against the dictator. Another scene is on page 30 where the dictator is controlling all of the TV channels and radio stations and how his face is posted everywhere. The last scene is on page 277 where Julian’s mother is talking about how their couldn’t come to connecticut with her yet because he was forced to stay in Cuba to build buildings. “We’re free!…

Cuban uses his extensive means for good too. Recently Cuban financed a docudrama about the March 2006 rape and murder of a Muslim girl (Zillgitt, 2010). The documentary provided opportunity for the MC students and generally the public to know more about the life that he lived and the legacy that he left behind particularly the “Tsinelas Leadership”. It was named after Jesse Robredo who is known to wear tsinelas even when carrying out his official duties as Cabinet Secretary. For me, it just shows his simplicity and his ties with the masses. I think leaders must be accessible to the people they serve instead of intimidating them through their influence, power and their wealth. But people were not shy to approach Robredo because he made them feel that he was also one of them, by simply wearing his comfortable slippers. This made him popular to the common people. The documentary showed the late secretary’s willingness to go where most people normally do not go just to be with the most underprivileged people. Whether responding to disasters or planning to rescue flood victims, Jesse Robredo would always turn up. The documentary also showed how he fought for the rights of the urban poor as well as the rights of the disabled people to a public education. The concrete proof of his works can be seen in the high schools, daycare…

The movie documentary on Cesar was very inspiring, all the fight he did just to try and make a change. He took a stand for farm workers, being exposed to pesticides and how it is harmful. Eventually some laws did pass and at the time were for the pesticides used then. He started this organization in 1962 the United Farm Workers. A month into his last fast he had lost 30 pounds, and other doctors had to come in and reexamine him for his health. His boycott against the grapes really was a long journey for him. The thing I found interesting was the masses they attended and how politicians would even show up to those masses and see what it was about. His 36th day of fasting was his last day which was a Sunday and he got to eat a little piece of bread. For a week he had to stay on fluids though before going back to eating regular food. That day many people attended the mass it was a big thing to see him come out from his fasting, but it didn’t mean he was going to stop fighting. He then later passed on in 1993 where 50,000 people had showed up and attended the funeral, it just goes to show how big of an impact and leader he was too many people. His story is truly amazing the courage he had to get things done, the motivation. He led a lot of people and was the spoke person for them all. I really liked watching the video learning more about him, which I didn’t know much about. Unfortunately there are still problems with the working conditions and farming and people are afraid to speak up.…

Looking back at the history of Cuba, there was a time when the country was quite prosperous. This was before Fidel Castro came into power. During the Batista government regime, Cuba had a strong economy and exported many goods. However, Castro started a rebellion and fought against the Batista and soon took over. Now, when people hear about Fidel Castro, they think about the negative aspects of his government regime: oppression, extreme socialist views, lack of food and other necessities for living, and the removal of people who went against his views. This paper aims to show that regardless of the negative policies Castro had in place, he played an important role in the arts for Cuba. His financial support of Alicia Alonso and her company, helped to foster an environment for people to learn about and build an appreciation for ballet and its contributions.…

there are many views on the Cuban Revolution and how it changed Cuba as a country, some say the revolution is good for the country where some people disagree strongly with it and say that it was not the right path for the country to follow and they should have followed traditional ways. Even with revolutions occurring all across the world and all throughout history women are still seen less than men , and this is one of the biggest challenges we face as humans inhabiting this…

First, I want to say that I loved the first documentary about George Washington and the rest of the presidents from the Revolutionary Generation. Despite being the first President of the United States and not knowing exactly what he should do, George Washington demonstrated amazing leadership skills in his two terms. The fact that G. Washington never got the chance to serve on Washington was quite ironic to me. Besides that, I loved to learn about how Jefferson embraced the simple things in life (like wearing slippers at home, even when he had guests), but I was also shocked to learn about the rumors of his affair with Sally Hemings, that’s something I’d never expect from an important figure like him, but we’ll never know if this was true or not. Finally, here is a fun fact I liked from the documentary: Back then eating ice cream was a privilege, and Dolly Madison’s (James Madison’s wife) favorite ice cream flavor was oyster…oyster! What a weird taste but hey, to each his own!…

As most potential viewers know, this film is based on diaries and letters to home written by Ernesto "Che" Guevara during a motorcycle and foot tour of a significant portion of South America during the early 1950s, years before Guevara achieved international renown as a Communist and Latino revolutionary. Thus, the film functions as an attempt to get at the heart of the person who preceded the myth. The film is therefore difficult to judge as pure cinema. Is this, on its own merits, a great film? Or is it a great film about Che Guevara? Interestingly, the person I saw this film with knew absolutely nothing about the subject of the film before it started, and did not connect Ernesto Guevara with Che Guevara until very late in the film. Her reaction was interesting. Until she realized that it was about Che, she says that she considered it a decent but only slightly above average "road" picture, but it gained considerably in her estimation once she realized who the film was…

In June 1947, Castro learned of a planned expedition to invade the Dominican Republic and overthrow the right-wing military junta of Rafael Trujillo, a U.S. ally.[20] Being President of the University Committee for Democracy in the Dominican Republic, Castro joined the expedition.[21] Launched from Cuba, the invasion began on July 29, 1947; it consisted of around 1,200 men, mostly exiled Dominicans or Cubans. However, Grau's government arrested many of those involved before they set sail; Castro evaded arrest.[22] Returning to Havana, Castro took a leading role in the student protests against the killing of a high school pupil by government bodyguards.[23] The protests, accompanied by crackdown on those considered communists, led to violent clashes between protesters and police in February 1948, in which Castro was badly beaten.[24] At this point his public speeches took on a distinctively leftist slant, condemning the social and economic inequalities of Cuba, something in contrast to his former public criticisms, which had centered around condemning corruption and U.S. imperialism.[24]…

The Cuban politician and revolutionary named Fidel Castro, had miraculously avoided 634 assassination attempts. These assassinations were mostly carried out by the CIA and Cuban exiles. One of the assassination schemes involved recruiting one of Castro's former lovers as a hitwoman who was supposed to sneak a poison pill into Castro's mouth while he slept. The woman later reported that Castro found out about this attempt and gave the woman his gun to kill him, but did not do it. Several other attempts involved an exploding cigar, a poisoned chocolate milkshake, toxic fountain pens and several other schemes, but none of them worked. Until the U.S stopped its assassination schemes against Castro.…

Fidel was friendly with the Soviet Union which upset the United States government. The Castro government controlled businesses and trade. The government controlled the people’s employment and set their salaries. The Cuban people had no say in how the government was run. The people no longer could worship freely, the labor unions had no rights and the newspapers were run by the government. Although Castro created a universal health care system and built many schools, the people had no control over what was taught in those schools. The government imprisoned and punished people who disagreed with their ideas. Many Cubans were saying “Inventar, Resolve, y Escapar” which means to be inventive, look for solutions to your problems, and escape Cuba as soon as possible. By limiting the rights of the people and antagonizing the U.S. and other countries, Fidel Castro hurt the Cuban economy and the Cuban…

A new form of cinema or third world cinema main goal is to challenge the power structure and in due course increase social consciousness. Social consciousness focuses specifically, on creating a rational thinking within society by incorporating politics, a sense of nationalism, and a wide range of ideologies. This intricate cinema wants to “organically” reveal the reality of what's going on as well as educate the individual living in this society. In relation to Cuba, it educates by demonstrating revolutionary regime ideas, since the Cuban revolution as its main objective was to gain self-sovereignty. Self-sovereignty is rooted in the idea that Cuba was rich in resources, yet still poor. In other words, they were underdeveloped. Memories of Underdevelopment by Tomas Gutierrez Alea, gives us a glimpse of what is like to live in an underdeveloped society. Memories of underdevelopment picks up after the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 entering post-revolutionary Cuba. With Sergio Corrieri, a fairly educated individual, as the main character, we see a reflection of Guevarra’s new man and Castro’s ideologies.…

In 1960, America was enjoying a period of relative prosperity. With the exception of the stirrings of the modern civil rights movement, domestic turbulence was low, and the primary foreign threat seemed to be the intensifying Cold War. Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba in 1959, and installed a Communist regime just ninety miles off the coast of Florida. In May 1960, an American U-2 spy plane was shot down inside the Soviet Union, further intensifying tensions between the superpowers. The Republican nominee, Vice President Richard Nixon, was enjoying a growing reputation for his foreign policy skills after his televised "kitchen debate" with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev in 1959. The Democratic nominee, charismatic Massachusetts Senator…
