The brutality and inhumane actions that the mob inflicted upon Fidel lopez caused, “a brain injury that took about two years to heal before he was well enough to return to full-time work” (Lopez, 4). This was the result but there was an ill fated effect, he returned for full-time
work but suffered from loss of equilibrium and tormenting nightmares. This effect caused his family to endure financial hardships, As Steve Lopez entered Fidel’s home, “...he told me, he's doing some work on the house in case he and his wife, Coralia, need to take in boarders” (Lopez 3). The mental disability that occurred to Fidel caused his family to perform drastic actions in order to pay for their expenses, Fidel’s wife, “... confessed to her husband that their gas and electricity might be cut off.” and decided to accommodate their home for boarders. Moreover, Fidel’s attacker Damian Williams “was sentenced to 10 years and served just four, his assault of Lopez reduced to a misdemeanor” (Lopez, 4). Fidel was able to forgive Damian and his mob, but his unwillingness to challenge Damian’s sentence and the cops inability to intervene in a moment of help caused Fidel’s effects to ungain results. Justice was the answer but Fidel chose to be a passive individual and move to a new city and form a new life.
Reflecting upon a personal experience, my father has also been unemployed for a year now, after quitting his job and sueing the company where he worked at. He would worked with all sorts of dangerous chemicals at his job, and in return he suffered from health complications. Where he then developed a skin condition called pemphigus vulgaris. Pemphigus vulgaris is when the top layers of your skin is attacked by your immune system. The body has a certain reaction which causes blisters all over the body, even in the mouth: therefore, taking so much medication pills, he ended up getting diabetes and began to lose his eyesight. However, after all, his eyesight got better, he is now taking less pills and has finally accepted his condition of being diabetic.
Eventually, both Fidel Lopez and my father were able to move along with their lives but unfortunately, the damaged still followed. Having to deal with an illness because of lack of fairness is falsely unacceptable. There are many public services that can help with victims who have trauma of victimization, mental illness, and health services. There is always a place to get help, and if anybody suffers from any kind of illness should definitely ask for help and not hide behind the shadows.
