Field Experience Reflection
When I first entered Shawnee Middle School I was unsure of how I would fit into world of education as a teacher. After my observation was done I changed my view of this and knew that I would make a great teacher. I was able to learn many different things that will be helpful to me when I get hired as an educator someday. Although I will have to face many challenges in the classroom, I possess many of the strengths it takes to be a good teacher. There were many times during the week that gave me a great idea of how the everyday life of a teacher would go. Also I got a great feel for how the classroom environment will be for most secondary educators. Overall it was a great experience for me and I learned a lot about myself, and the classroom. During my time in the classroom I felt very comfortable being around the students and helping them out when they asked me questions. As a teacher it is very important to feel comfortable in your work environment because if you don’t it will be nearly impossible for you to do your job in a successful manner. It was a great experience being around the students and being able to help them, which is one of the main reason for why I want to become involved in the profession. The classroom environment was a very inconsistent one and usually depended on how the students acted. If the students were well behaved it was very positive and constructive, but if the students were acting up it was exactly the opposite. The desks were lined up in straight rows to prevent students from interacting and talking too much during lectures. Also the room was decorated with colorful walls from posters to help create a positive classroom environment. Overall the classroom environment was set up to give each student the best possible chance they had to succeed. From my observation I believe the teacher involved the students a good amount during lectures and assignments. For example, during lectures on chapters the teacher included a guided reading.

The instructor interacted with students from asking questions to explain more in detail. The activity she provided was more lecturing and asking for feed back. Although, she did have them read silently and one student read for the whole class. Her lesson delivery was specific and content objectives were supported in using a web map. From the observation, the students appeared engaged but they sat for the entire segment, which could have been broken down by allowing different student to come to the board and write in the web-map. Another interaction the instructor did well was giving the student enough time to think about the question and respond.…

Over the course of my day at Shepherdstown elementary I learned a lot more than I thought would even be possible. I witnessed both the good and bad moments during my one short day. Mrs. Austin seemed to have it all together, she was an amazing role model in the classroom and showed me what I should and shouldn’t do in certain situations. Observing the classroom showed me that I need to learn a lot of vital information throughout the program at Shepherd in order to be able to become successful in the classroom one day. When I started my day at Shepherdstown Elementary, I had mixed feelings. I was passionate and eager to be there but I also felt a sense of intimidation and fear when I started interacting with the students. I began to watch the teachers and see what they were doing. After sitting in the classroom and getting adjusted, my feelings had transformed. I started becoming more comfortable and feeling a lot better about where I was. By the end of the day I had a remarkable time and I cannot wait to have a classroom of my own one-day.…

The teacher ignored most of what was going on and mostly focused on teaching what she was obligated to do for the day with no disregard to the students that wanted to learn. I found that there was a lack of classroom management for the same reasons as the climate. No assertion in rules, no discipline, no rewards, and not trying to get the class out of there cliques to work with others. What I learned from observing this class is to make sure there is always classroom involvement and to communicate with the students.…

When creating a positive learning environment, a teacher should consider the classroom ambiance. "The ambiance of a space affects the feelings or mood that a person gets when entering. These moods and feelings are influenced by order, color, sound, light, arrangement, and classroom decorations" (Armstrong 2015, pg. 133). The classroom environment that I would like to…
