This will have a direct influence on the actions the character performs, because of their lack of knowledge on the situation. Macbeth believes that chances of him being defeated are none, because the witches procephied "the power of man, for none of woman born, Shall harm Macbeth" (IV.i.70-71). But to Macbeth's dismay, Macduff was untimely ripped from his mother's womb meaning his was not born by natural childbirth (V.vii.15-16). Macbeth's lack of knowledge on Macduff and overwhelming amount of ambition lead to Macduff being the executor in Macbeth's…

Ross, a thane, walks outside the castle with an old man. They discuss the strange and ominous happenings of the past few days: it is daytime, but dark outside; last Tuesday, an owl killed a falcon; and Duncan’s beautiful, well-trained horses behaved wildly and ate one another. Macduff emerges from the castle and tells Ross that Macbeth has been made king by the other lords, and that he now rides to Scone to be crowned. Macduff adds that the chamberlains seem the most likely murderers, and that they may have been paid off by someone to kill Duncan. Suspicion has now fallen on the two princes, Malcolm and Donalbain, because they have fled the scene. Macduff returns to his home at Fife, and Ross departs for Scone to see the new king’s coronation. Macbeth is unimpressed that Macduff has abandoned him and fled to England to persuade Malcolm to fight against him. He orders to “seize upon Fife...and all unfortunate soul that trace him in line”. In essence, Macbeth’s paranoia results in him being more psychologically unstable, but this time about losing his crown rather than being caused by guilt. Also, the witches’ prophecies slowly begin to envelop, causing him to repeat the words for a false sense of confidence. However, Lady Macbeth ultimately gives in to the burden of internal guilt that was previously hidden prior to the sleepwalking scene in Act 5, Scene 1 and commits suicide. In Macbeth’s soliloquy discusses the futility of life, on account that it is meaningless, “signifying nothing”. These words highlight Macbeth’s acceptance of defeat and that all the power he’s acquired mean nothing anymore. During the final scene, the insane Macbeth reiterates witches’ prophecies on the fact that he is invincible. Contrastly, Macduff states that he was “from his mother’s womb untimely ripped”. Therefore, Macduff’s final words result in Macbeth’s inevitable realization of…

    Violence In Macbeth

    • 383 Words

I was told that this play is considered to be one of the more violent and gory plays by Shakespeare. In technicality, it was a rather violent play, but we, as the audience, were rarely shown the actual violence as most of the deaths happened off-stage. (I think I counted 3 on-stage deaths.) In the play, the witches plant an idea in the mind of Macbeth telling him he could be king (Inception??). Even though Macbeth is wary to kill the king, Lady Macbeth’s incessant spurring to kill the king forces Macbeth’s hand. In an attempt to “tie up loose ends” Macbeth kills the only other person who knew of his plan, Banquo. When Macduff, who is in England at the time, hears of the death of his family, he gathers an army and travels to overthrow Macbeth. Interestingly enough, one of his soldiers is one of my future math professors, Dr. Huffman! Macduff is successful in his fight against Macbeth, but instead of…

Lady Macduff is involved in one of the very few parent-child scenes of the play, where her playful dialogue with her sons immediately contradict Lady Macbeth. Her entire personality is painted in this one scene, where her outspokenness against her husband’s disloyalty is expressed, unlike Lady Macbeth’s seemingly loving married life. Lady Macduff serves as a sympathetic figure that influences the reader into disliking Macbeth, who is later the cause of her murder, contradicting the reader’s negative opinion on Lady Macbeth.…
