Water polo is a game played in the pool where the team tries to score by throwing the ball to their goal. It is a team sport that requires a minimum of 7 players in total. Figueroa’s Framework will be used to determine barriers that prevent me from playing water polo. Barriers can be cause by a variety of different factors. In Figueroa’s framework, barriers can be categorised into 5 levels: individual, interpersonal, institutional, structural and cultural. Some of the individual barriers I faced would be the focus today. The individual level in the Figueroa’s framework is regarded as personal, and is about how I perceive water polo. Some of the issues that will be examined are how my limited swimming abilities affected my attitude, belief and values. All of these barriers would subsequently impact how accessible water polo is to me.
My values are different from the values of other players and that may create a misunderstanding in the team. Values are qualities that we think are important and every one’s values are different. Values are usually determined by what is socially acceptable, therefore, people with different backgrounds tend to have different values. The hierarchy of needs deals with the levels of needs that a player has. At the bottom of the hierarchy is the very basic need, and once that is fulfilled, the next level of need is sort to be satisfied by the individual. The first and very basic need is physiological needs, which consist of things that I need to survive and also physiological abilities. Because my swimming ability is deficient, I focus solely on obtaining swimming abilities, and once that is obtained I will likely sort after other needs according to the hierarchy of needs constructed by Abraham
