And Then There Were None: “America’s #1 Best Selling Mystery” Many things make a mystery novel great. Agatha Christie just manages to use the very best of those things in her writing. Agatha Christie uses intentional figurative language which is developed through storm symbolism and animal imagery, this intentional writing justifies, And then there were none worthy of being labeled: America’s #1 best selling mystery. Agatha Christie’s use of storm symbolism throughout her novel builds mood and scene for the reader, keeping them on the edge of their seats. In the beginning of the book Emily Brent says “I don’t think this place would be very agreeable in a storm”. (Pg.52) This is not only stating the island and house is physically unstable

    Agatha Christie uses characterization to show the evil side of human nature, in her mystery novel And Then There Were None, through three important characters, which include Vera Claythorne, Philip Lombard, and Justice Wargrave. Christie shows characterization through Vera by making her a Dynamic character. Vera changes through the course of the work by influence of the life threatening situation that is going on around her. Vera Claythorne is witty and believes she was hired as a secretary to Mrs. Owen. Philip Lombard, a mysterious man, served as a soldier in Africa and often carries a gun with him. Among the other characters are William Blore, an ex-detective, and Dr. Armstrong who thinks he has been hired to look after the wife of the island's owner. Emily Brent, General Macarthur, Tony Marston think they have been invited for a visit with old friends. And Then There Were None examines justice, but it bends the manifestation by making the victims of murder, people who committed murder themselves.
