Fahrenheit 451 is the story of Guy Montag, a 30 year-old fireman in the future. Montag is uncontent with the world around him, but he doesn't know what he should do about it. Montag is married to Mildred. Guy is a fireman. In this book firemen don't put out fires they start them, mostly to burn books. When they burn the books, they also burn the houses and the people. The theme of dangerous censorship is effectively shown through setting, figurative language, and plot.…
I walked outside and it was hot vs. I took a leap outside into the sun that blazed down on me it felt like I was wearing millions of winter coats. Which one help you visualize which is happening better? The book I'm reading which is "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld used a lot of figurative language throughout this story. For an example on page 238 it states, "it just felt flat, like a song she'd heard to many time." By using a simile it helped me understand what she meant by flat. If that simile wasn't there I could of though it meant deflated or flat like a pancake. To add on, using figurative language makes the book more clear and it allows the book to continue with a flow. As you can see, the book I chose to read "Uglies" contains figurative…
James Maloney’s novel A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove is beautifully crafted and achingly honest exploration of the transformative power of love. Maloney uses language techniques, such as imagery, characterisation, symbolism, themes and figurative language. This entices the reader into, positions them to feel and think ways about the characters and is given to inform the reader about the character. In ABTWC Maloney has used unconditional love to express the characters inner thoughts. He uses this to meticulously craft abstruse themes and characterisations. The Ways he has shown how transformative love is through points mentioned before and through the different forms of love (conditional and unconditional). I will present ways…
When reading literature the author tries to establish emotion, satire, tone, and farce as well as other feelings and thoughts. When an author writes a poem they try to establish a feeling making the reader feel as if they are involved in the work being produced weather is be happy, sad, funny, or scary.…
In Into Thin Air by Jon Krakaeur, the author’s word choice of descriptive passages and vivid words help well understand his perspective. You see this whole story is written in perspective Jon Krakauer is a journalist by trade, and his motive for going on the Everest expedition is to write an article about the experience of climbing as part of a commercial expedition. The perspective is in the first person, but with a journalistic viewpoint. Krakauer often seems removed from the subject, describing events as objectively as possible, as one would expect in a journalistic article. For example, he is sometimes critical of his fellow climbers, even though elsewhere he describes…
Have you ever visited a different country and felt like a complete alien? Well, how would you feel if you were to move there, forever? The novel, Home of the Brave, by Katherine Applegate is the story of how a young refugee from war-torn Sudan learns to adjust to a new life in America with the help of friends and family. Katherine Applegate’s use of figurative language, first person point of view, and free verse poetry is the most effective way to reveal the story of a refugee adapting to life in America.…
Poe use's private thoughts, action, personification and symbolism to create the theme. According to paragraph number 11, it states "I could bear those hypocritical smiles no longer! I felt that I must scream or die!...". In other words, the narrator felt the agony that was being placed on him by the noises he was hearing. Another example of an indirect characterization is action.…
I can tell you the author's style in the book,In November. The author likes to use figurative language. She also likes to use descriptive words. Based on what I read she used personification. For example "tree's are standing". Personification is a figurative language it give's non-living objects human characteristics. she also used descriptive words. For example "the earth is white and silent." Descriptive words are words to give stuff a picture it allows the reader to picture that in their…
Most authors give small details throughout the novel of where and when a story takes place, and the reader must piece the bits together. As I lay dying is no exception and like any other book gives many examples of setting. First off you can tell that the story takes place many years ago through simple statements given throughout the novel. For example, when it says that all of the women inside of the house had to use fans to cool themselves it suggests that air conditioning was not around yet, therefore it was an earlier time. (Page 81) Also throughout the entire beginning of the novel Cash’s only tools for building Addie’s coffin are a saw and hammer, there is no mention of any newer power tools. Then when Anse is talking…
This passage shows the reader that the “beast” wasn’t something they could just get rid of by haunting and killing it. The “Lord of the Flies” or the beast, represents human nature and the evil, savagery, violence etc. that’s inside of us. William Goulding wrote this book to show the readers that we, human beings are known to be savages by nature. In other words, humans tend to act inhumane sometimes when it comes to surviving or for any other reason. For example, Jack made fun of piggy and the other boys laughed, that is a sign of inhumanity or when in chapter 9 the boys killed Simon thinking he was the beast. This passage has three literary elements. Figurative Language was the most obvious one, due to the fact that Simon was having a conversation…
What constitutes exceptional writing? In 1939, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’s work, The Yearling won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, a prize given once a year for outstanding achievements in literature. Set in the scrub forest of Northern Florida in the 1800s, The Yearling tells the story of the daily life of a family making sacrifices to survive and a boy who finds unexpected companionship in an orphaned fawn. What elevates this novel from a simple tale of a struggling family into a beloved classic that has endured the times is Rawlings’s brilliant use of sensory details, syntax, and figurative language.…
(1) Copy a passage that you find particularly beautiful or powerful. What devices (imagery, figurative language, etc.) did the author use to make an impact on the reader?…
Metaphors merge two superficially incompatible concepts to create symbolism. Metaphors have entailments through which they highlight and make coherent certain aspects of our experience. (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980:132). Metaphor is pervasive in everyday life, not just in language but in thought and action.…
Whether we know it or not, we make use of metaphors and the many ways in which they help us make sense of the world. A metaphor is defined as a figure of speech that identifies an object or an idea that is similar to an unrelated thing. The use of metaphors and the language that it portrays helps to create new insight and evidence of the universe. Metaphors not only help classify the culture and diverseness of the natural world, and help interpret the scientific world, but help us set our outlooks on society; however, some may argue metaphors are an impractical use of our language that only complicate things that can instead be stated clearer.…
We cry "scapegoat" to stigmatize all the phenomena of discrimination – political, ethnic, religious, social, racial, etc. – that we observe about us. We are right. We easily see now that scapegoats multiply wherever human groups seek to lock themselves into a given identity – communal, local, national, ideological, racial, religious, and so on’ (160). Fear and frustrations As seen with Fisher’s notion that there is a lack of central exchange, Girard notes that: ‘the real source of victim substitutions is the appetite for violence that awakens in people when anger seizes them and when the true object of their anger is untouchable.…
