Figurative Language In Rolling In The Deep
“Rolling in the deep” by Adele is a great use of figurative language. Some examples of literary devices found in this song are metaphors, hyperboles, personification, and idioms. The tone of the of the song is dejecting because Adele shows sadness throughout her song. The mood is sentimental and rage because she shows emotion and anger in her verses.
The figurative language in the song is viewed throughout the lyrics. In the verse “turn my sorrow into treasure gold” Adele is using personification. This is describing gold into a human emotion in which gold is a valuable. This lyric is an example of mood due to it being dejecting.
The literary device in the song, “the scars of your love, they leave me breathless” is a hyperbole and a metaphor.

James Maloney’s novel A Bridge to Wiseman’s Cove is beautifully crafted and achingly honest exploration of the transformative power of love. Maloney uses language techniques, such as imagery, characterisation, symbolism, themes and figurative language. This entices the reader into, positions them to feel and think ways about the characters and is given to inform the reader about the character. In ABTWC Maloney has used unconditional love to express the characters inner thoughts. He uses this to meticulously craft abstruse themes and characterisations. The Ways he has shown how transformative love is through points mentioned before and through the different forms of love (conditional and unconditional). I will present ways…

Symbolic Wounds Exploring scars as metaphors for trauma and strength in Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. In Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, scars serve not only as a physical mark but as a metaphor for the lasting effects of trauma and it changes the way that people or society views the victims of it.…

One way in which the poets present their ideas about the pain of love is through their use of imagery with their poems. For example, they both use metaphors about being ‘wounded’. Fenton’s line ‘I’m one of your talking wounded’ adopts a pun which relates to the expression ‘walking wounded’, used by soldiers to imply resilience. He feels as though love has previously ‘wounded’ him, if not actually finished him off. Similarly, continuing with the theme of violence, Duffy uses an extended metaphor throughout the whole poem which presents the break-up of her relationship as a gunfight in a Western movie. Lexis such as ‘trigger’, ‘silver bullets’, ‘wide of the mark’ and ‘blast me’ presents the effect of breaking up as wounding her physically.…

In Into Thin Air by Jon Krakaeur, the author’s word choice of descriptive passages and vivid words help well understand his perspective. You see this whole story is written in perspective Jon Krakauer is a journalist by trade, and his motive for going on the Everest expedition is to write an article about the experience of climbing as part of a commercial expedition. The perspective is in the first person, but with a journalistic viewpoint. Krakauer often seems removed from the subject, describing events as objectively as possible, as one would expect in a journalistic article. For example, he is sometimes critical of his fellow climbers, even though elsewhere he describes…

Figurative language and sensory imagery is used in the first stanza to create a tone of grieving, loss and nostalgia, through imagery of a dull ‘cold dusk’ and ‘frail, melancholy flowers among ashes’. The simile ‘the melting west is striped like ice-cream’ creates a sense of transition, reflecting the beginning of the persona’s introspective retreat into her thoughts. The use of an anaphora, which is the repetition of a word at the beginning of lines or sentences, in the line ‘Ambiguous light. Ambiguous sky’ also displays this transience. The symbol of ice-cream also represents childhood and a feeling of nostalgia for that time in the persona’s life. Her attempt at ‘whistling a trill’ may be an attempt to imitate her father’s whistling which is mentioned during the reflection of her memory, suggesting that she is trying to recreate her past experience but can’t properly do so. The persona’s direct speech in the line “Where’s morning gone?” is a rhetorical question that is questioning the…

In the song you will hear unorthodox and sensitive methods of figurative language. “Flow like the blood of Abraham through the Jews and the Arabs, Broken apart like a woman's heart, abused in a marriage, the brink of holy war, bottled up, like a miscarriage” This line is layered with symbolism and similes. He cleverly uses biblical stories with emotional tragedy to describe the splitting of a nation with foreshadows of war. As a listener it’s hard not to feel emotion with this imagery.…

On the last stanza, he was describing what the accident left his brother. His fragility causes bruises on his head, “Wearing a poopy bruise on his left temple,”(19). He may not have any other scars, but it was clear that the accident really did kill him. How for the last time, he sees him peacefully lying on his bed, he realized how life was too short, his brother who was only four years old, only had four years to enjoy his life is now gone, “He lay in the four foot box as in his cot. No gaudy scars, the bumper knocked him clear. A four foot box, a foot for every…

This opaque poem is about a woman who is frightful of permanence; she is worrisome that her relationship will not be as permanent as the tattoos on her partner’s body. Two poems that share similar feelings about love are 'in Paris with you' and 'Quickdraw' as they both explore the theme of conflict and emotional pain instigated by love. Fenton makes it clear in the first stanza that the speaker has been hurt in the past, claiming that he was 'one of your talking wounded' which is a pun on the phrase 'walking wounded'. However, this phrase is pursued by a. Use of neologism 'maroonded' which serves to create an apparent carefree tone carried on through-out the poem. However, as the poem progresses it becomes apparent that the light-hearted mood hides a deeper subtext and is a cover for the speaker's true feelings. Similarly Duffy makes use of an extended metaphor 'a western stand-off', using the slightly chilidish image to to conceal her true feelings and the more serious emotional pain which results from love. She makes use of lexical choices from the semantic field of battle or a western style stand-off "guns, trigger, Sheriff, last chance saloon" to reflect how she is feeling in the relationship as well as avoiding the reality of the issue.…

I think the lyrics are very simple and ordinary rather than poetic because Hurt wants to show what his everyday life has become with lyrics such as “my back and shoulders tired” which could be the case as he is constantly travelling and doesn’t get to sleep on a comfortable bed back home but rather a bunk on a bumpy train. The song continues to almost take shape of a letter as he says lyrics like “I told you, I’m coming there won’t you look for me” which makes the audience ponder if he may be having an affair and the song was written while he was en route to go see this girl in secrecy.…

In "Greasy Lake" by T. Coraghessan Boyle, the author illustrates the journey towards adulthood for three teenage boys in a time when it was hip to be "bad." The narrator, the protagonist of the story, and his friends, Digby and Jeff, consider themselves to be "dangerous characters"(129) as they keep toothpicks in their mouths, wear torn-up leather jackets, sniff glue, and drink gin. The story begins with the "bad" boys taking out the narrator's mother's station-wagon to cruise the local strip, while eating and drinking alcohol. As the night winds down, the boys head to a disgustingly filthy place where the "bad" go to be bad called Greasy Lake. This begins a series of terrible events where the boys beat someone almost to the point of death,…
