Figurative Language In The Scarlet Ibis
In the world, there are so many moments that can lead to love, and unfortunately, also regret. Many of these moments begin with pride. In the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”, there are many events that lead to both of these things. Doodle and his brother are both put in positions where they have to make a decision on what matters to them the most. The author, James Hurst, from ¨The Scarlet Ibis¨ uses diction and figurative language to prove that pride is something that allows people to love, yet can also lead to regret. Pride was found through love in some part of the story. It was found from Doodles brother when the author mentioned, “But all of us must have something or someone to be proud of, and Doodle had become mine. I did not know
that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing…”. This is showing how Doodle’s brother had come to love his brother out of the pride he grew from teaching him everything he did. Even though he did it for himself, he could not help but be proud of what he made happen. Doodle also had something he took pride in; his brother, ¨Doodle was my brother and he was going to cling to me forever, no matter what I did...¨. He always wanted to go with his brother to see him do things that he could not do. He grew pride out of his brother by spending time watching him do what has wanted to do and worked to do. Pride can be leading to love, but it is also lead to regret in this story. Doodles brother is regretful when thinks about how he wanted ¨someone to perch with in the top fork of the great pine behind the barn, where across the fields and swamps you could see the sea. I wanted a brother¨ (67). His brother had almost too much pride in his brother, which lead him to over push his brother too hard, resulting in his death. This filled him with regret because he wanted his brother back, and no matter how many times he said it, he did not want him to die. Besides the main characters, Doodles parents were also left with a bit of regret when incidents happened while Doodle was under his brother's care after his mom told him to ¨¨Take Doodle with you¨¨(). His parents regret always leaving him with his brother because his carelessness is what lead to his death. If they were to take care of them on their own, Doodle might still be here.
