In literature you find things like figurative language, mood, and lastly tone. Tone is the attitude the writer has toward its work. It is their perspective on the subject that they are writing about and many mistake it with mood. It is based off of how you would imaging the author telling the story. The story ‘Half A Day’ establishes tone throughout the entire story by the authors use of figurative language and you get the general tone from the very start as the narrator describes his feelings. The narrator uses a clear tone of reluctance when mentioning he was not altogether happy when attending school. ‘Half A Day’ uses vivid figurative language and you clearly understand where the story is going. He describes that school did not need to tear him away from the familiarity of his own home and throw him “into this building that stood at the end of the road like some huge, high-walled fortress, exceedingly stern and grim” (Mahfouz 1). The author begins the story by using negative connotations showing his aggravation toward having to go to school and he compares the school to a very tough and gloom , tall building. The story continues by explaining how crammed the schoolyard was full of children, using another negative connotation to show the large amount of kids in a smaller area. He also mentioned as the door made a pitiful screech, the children in bursted in tears. In ‘War’ the story begins by mentioning the passengers in a carriage and how the woman was very upset and restrained from speaking, causing her husband to explain why she is so hurt. The argument begins and the passengers compare themselves to one another which does not establish a feeling or tone at this point in the story. He explains the games he played and how he was introduced to his first language. The tone slightly shifts back and forth at this point. After he discusses the good things he has experienced, he reveals how his teachers were harsh at some points. It portrays as happy and grateful but turns slowly into displaying his negativity and resentment toward the authority figures. “And while the lady would sometimes smile, she would often scowl and scold” (Mahfouz 3). In War, it still lacks establishment when they are proving a point, so the tone is argumentative in that sense, but still not has clearly defined in ‘Half A Day’. For example “Do we think of the country when we give life to our children?” (Pirandello 3). Its an argumentative episode from the passenger so it sends that tone but it is not as strong as the tone portrayed in ‘Half A Day’. The characters are all trying to argue their point giving no room for a valid
