FIGURE OF SPEECH
A figure of speech is a mode of expression in which words are used out of their literal meaning or out of their ordinary use in order to add beauty or emotional intensity or to transfer the poet 's sense.
FIGURES OF SPEECH | EXAMPLE (in Filipino Language/Context) | 1. SIMILE - an explicit comparison that is made between two essentially unlike things, usually using ‘like’, ‘as’ or ‘than’. | Mala-porselana ang kutis ng mga gumagamit ng sabon na ito. | 2. METAPHOR - compare one thing to another in terms of a different object or idea, often using the word "is." In a figure of speech, they are plainly stated, to the point and directly said. | Ang galit ay ang apoy na sumusunog sa aking puso.Ang kanyang kagandahan ay isang bituing nagniningning. | 3. HYPERBOLE - distorts facts and is meant to exaggerate an idea, making the figure of speech critical, sometimes satirical and oftentimes humorous. | Inuulan ng pangungutya ang batang kaawa-awa. | 4. OXYMORON - uses two words that contradict each other in one sentence. These polar opposite words are meant to give obvious hints to the underlying meaning of the sentence. | Batang matanda, tamis-anghang | 5. ONOMATOPOEIA - The use of words that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to. | ‘tok-tok-tok’ – a knock on the door‘tik-ti-la-ok!’ – a sound that cocks make every morning | 6. METONYMY - A figure of speech in which one word or phrase is substituted for another with which it is closely associated; also, the rhetorical strategy of describing something indirectly by referring to things around it. | Nagdiwang ang Malacañang sanhi ng pagpapalaya ng mga Pilipinong bihag ng mga pirata sa Somalia.(Malacañang – Pangulo at kanyang mga opisyal) | 7. SYNECDOCHE – a figure of speech in which a part is used to represent the whole. | Handa kong ibigay ang aking puso upang makasal na tayo.(puso
