Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Introduction
As we know, like most people living in urban areas, we have to a large extent, taken many conveniences of course the internet access as source of knowledge and entertainment, on educational and a medium communication. Despite the numerous advantages of the internet, we should not overlook its dark sides of it that is Internet addiction. Internet addiction can be defined as the uses of Internet excessively. “Internet addiction can be described as an impulse control disorder, which does not involve use of an intoxicating drug is very similar to pathological gambling” (‘Internet Addiction’, 2013, March 14).
In matriculation life, Internet addiction causes a very negative impact towards students. I strongly believe that Internet addiction may become the biggest problem in students’ life. This is because Internet addiction may affect students’ health, unable to manage their time properly which lead to stress and last but not least affect student’s performances in their academic.
2.2 Overview of Internet
It is a universal belief that Internet is a great source of entertainment. “It provides a lot of entertainment that humans need” (Jacob, 2013). Students could play electronic games which allow them to race like a Formula One driver or even playing a game that is popular among boys which is ‘Dota’. “Today many people are watching or downloading free entertainment on the internet, and many people are playing on-line games.” (‘Advantages and Disadvantages’, 2013, March 14). Some of students rather stay up late just to play online games and that will affect their health for not getting enough rest. “Too much staying up late may cause a bad migraine. Being addicted to the Internet can also cause physical discomfort or medical problems such as: dry eyes, backaches, severe headaches, eating irregularities, failure to attend to personal hygiene and sleep disturbance.” (‘Internet Cybersex Addiction’, 2013, March 14) Therefore students have to reduce the number of hours they spend for Internet to stay healthy.
2.3 Disadvantages of Internet
The next point is that the Internet addiction will cause students to become unable to manage time properly and thus lead to stress. It is hard to deny that lack of ability to manage time may contribute stress in student’s life. For instance, a student may spend time watching online dramas for a day without even taking a break. When someone gets addicted to the Internet it is very hard to get rid of those habits and of course it will bring harm to the students. “The Internet can be an escape from feelings of depressions, but too much online can make things worse. Internet addiction further contributes to stress, isolation and loneliness.” (‘Advantages and Disadvantages’ using Internet, 2013, May 13)Students tend to be lazy and would rather spend their time in front of the laptop and when the homework is too many the cant manage to hand in their homework on the given time, this will trigger stress in the student.
2.4 Advantages of Internet
“Some people use the Internet to relieve stress; it can have a counterproductive effect. The longer you spend online, the higher your stress levels will be.” (‘Internet Addiction’, 2013, May 13)
Last but not least, addiction to the Internet will affect student’s performance in academic. As everyone knows online social networking is very popular among teenagers. Facebook and Twitters are some of the examples of social networks that can keep teenagers up to date with current event occurring all over the world. They can post and tweet whatever they want. It becomes a daily diary and cause addiction. All these facilities enable people to communicate with other people from different countries around the world so that it can explore other cultures of different ethnicity. Therefore students who get addicted to the Internet can affect the concentration on studies and spend more time chatting or surfing the Internet instead of studying. At the end, the students are unable to do well in academics.
Some suffering from Internet addiction may create on-line personals or profiles where they are able to alter their identities and pretend to be someone other himself or herself. Those at highest risk for creation of a secret life are those who are suffer from low self-esteem feelings inadequacy, and fear of disapproval. Such negative self-concepts lead to clinical problems of depression and anxiety. ( Jacob, 2013)
2.5 Conclusion As a conclusion, Internet addiction may actually harmful for students. But Internet can be a good medium if it is being used properly as it has provided us with benefits ranging from entertainment to communication and education. “However, Internet also has much negative side. Therefore, use the Internet for positive things so that we get a lot benefits” (‘Advantages and Disadvantages’, 2013, May 14 ). To overcome Internet addiction, the person need to have courage and motivate their self to reduce the number of hours spend surfing on the Internet systematically. “For many people, an important aspect of overcoming Internet and computer addiction is to find alternate ways to handle these difficult feelings. Even when your Internet use is back to healthy levels, the painful and unpleasant feelings that may have prompted you to engage in unhealthy Internet use in the past will remain” (Jacob, 2013).

Surfing the web might harm your studies because it causes you to waste time. Whenever I go to study the first thing I do is open my computer. This harms my studies because I spend hours on YouTube, socializing with friends, and I easily lose track of time. When I’m surfing around on the Internet, even while studying, one of my main targets of interest is YouTube. This is a streaming website where other users submit videos to be enjoyed by people, such as myself. I follow several people on YouTube whom upload videos daily, due to this I can spend hours watching videos to make sure I don’t miss anything. By the time I’m done, most of the day will be gone and I have very little time to do anything else, such as study. Another distraction that harms my studies whilst on the Internet is socializing with friends through video games. When I get into a video game I usually play for a minimum of four hours before moving onto something else in my day. This is harmful to my studying because I waste a lot of time, and my eyes get very tired making it hard to read information. Whether it’s watching videos on YouTube, playing a game, or just searching for information around a random topic that interests me, I easily lose track of time. I’ve been known to grab hold of a topic and not let go until I find the information I’m looking for or until my body finally tells me that it’s far past bedtime. At first thought you may think this is not a bad habit but the topics I choose are always irrelevant to studying. This is detrimental because a lot of time gets wasted with no fruitful results in my studies. This is why I believe surfing the web harms my studies.…

There are many advantages of the internet towards university students. Firstly, the process of learning is more efficient. On the internet, you can use different ways to actually learn about something. For example, during lecture most of the lecturer only use notes from the textbook and for some students, they find it very difficult to understand the content of the lecture as they have problem imagining it. On the internet, it is possible for students to search for videos related to the topic and learn from it. It is much more helpful this way because most videos available on the internet use sketches and easy-to-understand graphics. Next, the advantages of the internet can be seen from the amount of information provided. Notes from the lecturer sometimes does not actually provide much information as they are too straightforward and simple. This situation will hinder the process of learning of the students as they don’t have full understandings on certain topics. Finally, the internet can help the students to do project and assignment.
