Filipino American History Month Short Story
As part of Filipino American History Month, today I’ll be sharing my top ten TBR books from #romanceclass. It is a website and community that specifically focus on highlighting independently published books from Filipino authors. So far, I’ve only come to read books by Mina Esguerra, Six de los Reyes, and Agay Llanera. Though, one thing is for sure I want to read more from this genre.

Below, you could see what’s on my TBR list.

What About Today by Dawn Lanuza

Who wouldn’t’ fall in love with that pastel cover? The premise seems to offer a ride to the possibility of vanilla friendship or romance. That is instantly a yes for me.

If there’s one thing I dreaded in high school it would be P.E., there’s no love lost between sports and I. Ironically, I love reading sports books that have a romance subplot. This one hit my spot just well.

I can’t wait to see how this will turn out!

My friend Sil from The Book Voyagers recommended this short story to me. I love the cover and it seems a quirky read. I’m excited to get my hands on it.

Hope Solo My Story By Hope Solo, was written to entertain the reader. The main purpose of this book was to get Hope’s story out there so she sounds like a mean person with no feelings. Hope Said some things that were rude about one of her teammates because she wasn't started in an important game. Hope had a meltdown and he could be one of the reasons she wrote this book. Hope was upset and embarrassed the whole entire team. Her teammates hated her and the girl who she thought she was close to back stabbed her. Hope took a break and hoped things would get better. The books that we discussed this week were two historical fiction books, Separate is Never Equal and Sylvia & Aki, and one history book, the Journey: Japanese Americans, Racism & Renewal. I love how the three books give me more than just the pleasure of reading. I also love the fact they have given me better understanding and more knowledge of the lives and the struggles of Mexican Americans and Japanese Americans in the past , in the ways that historical fiction books and a factual historical book do.…

The subject of my interview is Rob Reyes. He has been our next door neighbor since we moved here to Indio six months ago. He is a second generation Filipino-American that was born in America and has lived in California all of his life. Rob is 26 years old and has been married to his wife Sandra, 27, for 2 years. They don’t have any children, but do plan on having some once they save more money and the economy gets better. They are not rushing it because they have 3 dogs that are their “kids” for the time being, plus they like having their friends over on Friday nights for poker and social drinks. Rob is a technician for Time Warner Cable and has been employed with them for 7 years. His wife Sandra works at a doctor’s office in Palm Springs 30 miles away, so both of them are gone most of the day and we only see them in the evening when they are home from work.…

When people think of Asian-Americans, typically people automatically think of just Chinese people or Japanese people. The Asian-American community is made up of not only the Chinese and Japanese, but also Filipino, Indian, Vietnamese, and Korean. The term Asian American was used informally by activists in the 1960s who sought an alternative to the term Oriental, arguing that the latter was derogatory and colonialist. Usually when people say Oriental, they are referring to a food, not a person.…

Fifty Shades of Grey, was a decent book however what really got me to read this book was that I had read this poem from EL James. She had said that, “Sometimes I wonder if there's something wrong with me. Perhaps I've spent too long in the company of my literary romantic heroes, and consequently my ideals and expectations are far too high.”(GoodReads) I then discovered she had written this book, and I had to read it.…

Last summer I was training for cheer competitions while also trying to prep for my AP Literature course. I spent hours at school practicing cheers, stunting, conditioning, keeping a book by my side the whole time. I annotated works of literature at cheer camp, and spent my vacation at Las Vegas inside hotel wrapped up in the new worlds I was discovering. This summer I took classes, long hours and stressful nights but I got what I needed to get done, done. I slept over at friends’ houses, watched horrible 90’s romances, while stuffing our faces with candy and eating fruit bowls. We talked about our futures, and crushes. I worked hard over my summers but I still made time to be a teenager and have my version of…

It was the fourth quarter of thee first freshman game of the season and we were down by eight. One moment they were all playing next moment there was a player down. The poem 'My Last Farewell' was Jose Rizal's patriotic goodbyes, first to his country, his family and above all to his Heavenly Father. To his country he said, 'With gladness do I give you my life.' He tried to comfort his parents and dear ones with these lines: 'I'll go where there are no slaves, tyrants or hangmen; Where faith does not kill and where God alone does reign.' The last line of the poem says: 'To die is to rest.'…
