Boys Don’t Cry

Boys Don’t Cry is a movie examining the life of the late Teena Brandon. It is an intense movie that follows her journey to self-discovery and essentially her passing. Boys Don’t Cry not only explores how difficult it is to be queer but also what it means to have a sexual identity crisis (as Brandon puts it). Brandon goes through so much to cover his true identity and in the end nothing is enough. This adaptation of a true story engages and walks the watcher through the difficulties transgender people have in life. The opening scene of Boys Don’t Cry lets the audience know that Teena Brandon has now become Brandon Teena. Following the lines of New Queer Cinema this film gives the outside world a new way to look at transgender individuals. This film breaks new ground by

Through out the movie we see Brandon searching for the perfect girl. His cousin, Lonnie, even says on the phone call back home from Falls City “no more girls” The romantic aspect of this film re-examines what romantic movies are really about. In this film Brandon is the apidemy of hot for a girl living in Nebraska. And even though Brandon has a secret no one cares because the way he talks and treats girls in interpreted as cute and loving so the lie doesn’t matter. When transforming from Teena to Brandon she/he chooses the sweetheart cowboy to be her male persona. With a cowboy hat and a little bit of a twang Brandon is able to sweep girls of their feet. Even with the first girl in the opening scene, Nicole, she points out that Brandon isn’t from around here and when asked where he is from she replies “somewhere beautiful.” Brandon’s boyish/girlish good looks and cowboy “I’m here to save you” charm wins everyone over. Enough so that his small physique and high voice gets left

“Boys will be boys,” a commonplace phrase that constitutes a diffusion of responsibility away from the male perpetrators of aggressive attitudes and behaviors, supports a dangerous rhetoric that a young male transitioning into adulthood will perform acts of aggression, display a detached and uncaring disposition, and develop attitudes of intense homophobia and sexism as part of a biological norm of that stage of adolescence, a stage of life comprising a larger and larger part of young man’s life, ages 16-29. Kimmel challenges this rhetoric, arguing that there is an underlying culture of entitlement (as the gaining of equality by other groups such as women and minorities are perceived as a threat to privileges that the white man “deserves,” a zero-sum game of status) that is supported by a culture of silence (of refusing to bear witness to other men’s transgressions, which is perceived as support) and a culture of protection (in which communities shield “their” guys from the harsh implications and accountability) which allows these behaviors and attitudes to persist. Kimmel argues that…

One thing the movie tries to teach us is the struggle to come to one’s sexuality, Sometimes in life one’s sexuality is harder than we think. In the movie, “The History Boys”, the film showcases this reality in two different viewpoints. The first viewpoint would be through the perspective of a teenage boy. The teenage boy, Posner, exemplifies this quality by simply living in a world of social awkwardness while theoretically becoming a man. The second viewpoint would be through the perspective of an older man. In the story, two older men named Hector and Irwin reproduce this lesson by both repressing their desires due to social norms. One represses himself by touching inappropriately boys, while the other stays in silent. Both of these men…

First off, Boys parents, sisters, childhood friends, and neighbors all played their parts well, but it was done so in such an average fashion that it felt rather dull and predictable. I understand the importance of their parts in showing how society has these stereotypical views and the effect it causes, but it could have still been done in a more creative way. However, it was refreshing to see that not all Boy’s sisters were…

Watching Jack Katz film, Tough Guise, taught me so much of what men have to struggle with every day. It made me empathetic to men that have grown in this “Boys don’t cry” society, because they are prohibited to freely express themselves. It must be so hard for men to not be able to be who they are without others calling them degrading names. This has taught me not to judge men who can’t express themselves…
