Film Analysis: Chicago Girl
Depending on where you live, it is safe to say that a majority of people have the right to speak up for their beliefs and defend themselves by calling out those who are oppressing them. However, unlike the United States, where it is the right of all it’s citizens to voice their opinions, there are many countries that put limitations on what can be said and punish those who violate the rules. The United Nations wrote the “Universal Declaration of RIghts” document which lists thirty articles that state the rights that all human beings need to have, including the right to vocalize their opinions freely. Freedom of speech is one of the most crucial rights that anyone can have because it allows them to stand up for people causing injustice to others. …show more content…
Although they may not witness the suppression of speech being forced upon others, they may have seen it on the news or have read about it in articles. In the documentary “Chicago Girl” the film follows the story of a 19 year old girl that is leading a revolution in Syria against their leader Bashad al-Assad. The film shows the citizen being killed and tortured after standing their ground and demanding to have their rights as human beings. The documentary depicts the hierarchy of the country showing that the citizens are at the bottom with little to almost no rights, while the leaders are at the top and do whatever they want. When a country follows the economic system of communism it comes with some limitations on freedoms of expressing opinions. Even though in this system all people are treated as equals it is also a way for leaders to enforce censorship of topics over the entire nations. This means that if there is no freedom of expression that means that everybody, no matter their rank in social status must follow these rules. According to an article published on the Stanford University website, the author explains how communism works in China and the censorship they have online. Unlike other countries where people can post a blog whenever they want, China receives all publish information and it is carefully examined in order to see if someone is trying to publish an opinion that the government does not agree with or so that the public is unable to see

Hollywood entered a new phase with the coming of sound movies in 1927 and it was also chronicled as the golden decade for the crime film, with the flourishing of two classical genres-gangster film and prison film. The gangster films echoed the financial predicaments of many ordinary Americans during the Great Depression, and in doing so it influences the succeeding genres. Gangster films connected criminality with economic hardship and portrayed gangsters as underdogs. They soothed the financially struggling Americans and at the same time attacked crime and the government’s inability to control it. Prison films also had its root in silent films which became popular in the 1930s, left the audience cheering for the “wrong side” (Rafter 20).…

Everyone has a freedom of speech, but others should not try to stop others from exercising their rights. A person can’t say the other is wrong or fight a person to join their side or that their side is right. A person can try to use facts and try to educate a person of their viewpoint. People are not entitled to have their viewpoints be received by people. A person does not have to agree with you on your viewpoint. You can’t change a viewpoint of another. I will be writing about 50 First Dates starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. This movie is about a girl who gets into an accident that results in brain damage. Then she experiences a form of amnesia called “Goldfield’s Syndrome” according to the movie. Basically, Goldfields syndrome doesn’t allow Drew to form new memories, but doesn’t erase what she knew before the accident. She can remember up to one day, then she relives the next day as if it was the first day after the accident, over and over again. The movie has its strengths and weaknesses in accurately portraying the memory. For the most part, I believe the movie did a good job portraying it.…

Freedom of speech is a privilege that we often take for granted. In early Roman history the Plebians had no say in anything that went on. All of the decisions were based on what the wealthy and powerful thought best. What was the result of this injustice? War! We have the right to speak our minds and be heard. And because of the freedom of speech we have a possibility of making a change in this world. Without it, we would be in constant war, fighting to speak our minds.…

Censorship’s negative effect will arouse a rebellion that would be more egregious than the Tiananmen Square Massacre of 1989, once Chinese people find out that their own Chinese troops, slaughtered several students who were just participating in a non-violent protest. The Chinese people and the Chinese culture would not be the same after the Tiananmen Square Massacre on June 4th, 1989. Since the protest, the Chinese government suppressed everything from the Chinese people. This included google, social media, and anything of that sort that would allow one to search anything ‘incriminating’, like Tiananmen Square. Furthermore, if any Chinese citizen, who was able to live to tell the tale, would also be punished, whether being…

Being able to express one’s self is one of the most important rights of the people to maintain a connected society right to speech should be accepted to do so. The first amendment is one of the most fundamental rights that individuals have. It is fundamental to the existence of democracy and the respect of human dignity. This amendment describes the principal rights of the citizens of the United States. If the citizens were unable to criticize the government, it would be impossible to regulate order. By looking at freedom of speech there is also freedom of assembly and freedom of press that are crucial for the United States democracy. According to the “Derechos, Human Rights”, freedom of speech is one of the most dangerous rights, because it means the freedom to express one's discontent with the status quo and the desire to change it. These types of rights are protected by the first amendment. There are groups for example like ACLU and other type of organization. ACLU is “America’s nation's guardian of liberty”, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights that the Constitution protects. We should be allowed to try our first amendment right specifically dealing with freedom of speech.…

    Censorship In China

China is infamous for censorship, which is utilized by the government to supervise social issues with problematic implications. Assumption that this policy is without exemption is ignorant to the complex social hierarchy of those that are considered “free-speech elite,” an exclusive status grated to the ideological, intellectual, linguistic, and financial elite. Criticisms of the Communist Party of China are generally unwelcome and met with intolerance, but ears are open to these groups of merited individuals with potential to improve the government from the inside. A large population with a plethora of ethnicities and ideologies that resent the government can pose a potential threat to the stability of the population, therefore, freedom of expression in China is “A privilege, not a right.” (Rubio, Marco) If one has lucrative business connections, specialized education, or has an impressive linguistic résumé, they have the potential to strengthen the ever-growing Chinese government and are able to constructively criticize the government. This is the result of cost-benefit analysis applied to civil…

Nowadays, freedom of speech is actually increasing; so many countries now hear their citizens' voice and actually take it under highly consideration. "There is evidence that freedom of expression protections are positively related to increased economic growth, democracy levels, sociopolitical stability, and nonviolent methods of conflict compared to violent methods." (Britt Christensen, Ph.D . February 12 , 2015). So that is why giving people the chance to express themselves about the laws and rules can be highly affective and…
