The Book of Kells is a lavish bible filled with intricate artwork that was created in 800 CE. Around 1,200 years later an animated movie describing the story behind the creation of the Book of Kells, called The Secret of Kells, was created. Even though the Book of Kells and The Secret of Kells were created 1,200 years apart, the original manuscript influenced the creators and animators of the movie.
The physical depictions of objects and people in the Book of Kells are very abstract. For example, in the image of the Virgin and the Child her body is not proportionally correct. The virgin’s face is about seven times the size of her head, her feet are so small that it is almost hard to notice them, and her legs are about twenty times skinnier than her body. This image strays away from naturalism and realism. Naturalism and realism are terms used to describe artwork that attempts to mirror the real shape, scale, and form of objects as they are depicted in the real world. The Book of Kells heavily influenced the animation of The Secret of Kells. In The Secret of Kells the animators used an abstract style throughout the entire movie. The Secret of Kells does a great job of capturing the movie essence of the Book of Kells in movie form. Things such as the lettering and the abstract artwork that is in the original manuscript influence the movie. If I could improve a characteristic that The Secret of Kells lacked, I would improve the use of color in the movie. In the Book of Kells there is an obvious use of the colors green, red, blue, and gold that the movie lacks. Regardless of this, it is evident that the Book of Kells influenced the animators and creators of The Secret of
