Film Analysis: The Danceworks Mad Hot Program
The Danceworks Mad Hot program is implemented in schools in which serve urban youth in low-income, central city schools. The following documentary focuses its attention on classrooms of fifth graders. The outcome goals of the arts and physical education is to improve students’ social and emotional skills, respect for self and others, and attitudes toward physical activity. There are clear signs of needs that this program can offer solutions to in specific schools. One of the principals participating in the movement explains that most of the children are enveloped in a “97% poverty rate, majority are from the Dominican Republic, and live in single-parent homes.” Therefore, they do not have a lot of social or financial advantage. There is evidence that the operation of the program is being carried out each week with trained instructors who not only offer dance instruction, but also authoritative advice about life skills (i.e., how to look professional and hold behavioral posture). Instructors often gather to re-evaluate the criteria of the teachings and ratings at the annual competition. This method is an excellent route towards inter-rater reliability. If one uses a cost benefit analysis viewpoint upon examining the extent to which the instruction was beneficial, they would find that the ballroom program was worth the investment. On a surface level, the dance lessons, competition, and costumes were free of cost. However, as one dives deeper, it is evident that the program cuts financial costs to society in the long run. This situation can be defined by several aspects. One example would be prison expenses. If these ballroom classes are offering students an advantage socially and behaviorally, there is a greater chance of keeping them off “the streets.” This is turn would result in a low jail rate. Although this impact may not be entirely visible years after the program was initiated, it is still apparent numerically in the future.
Overall, the Danceworks Mad Hot ballroom dance program offers several indications for its success in the classroom. Not only does it meet the needs of educational issues, but it also makes a large influence on society down the road. This can only be carried out through a positive process throughout the movement. Only then can the program be concluded to have great outcome evaluations. The documentary highlights some of the beneficial works being done with fifth graders in the central city. Fortunately, these efforts are going a long way for the students
