The culture of the Meriam People forms a big part of his identity which he takes great pride in. Though he was exiled from Murray Island at a young age, he still associates himself to being an Islander and takes great pride in being so. When he first introduces himself to Netta, he uses his Indigenous name – “Whitefellas’ name Eddie, but it’s Koiki for real.” Eddie is introducing himself to a girl he seemingly likes a lot evident by over-the-shoulder-shots between the two and Eddie’s stunned and giddy expression shown by the close-ups on his face. The audience may interpret this introduction as just a cultural agenda as Netta too looks to be Indigenous. However most may associate his introduction as Eddie being proud of his race. Eddie wants people to know that he is proud of being Indigenous and this is shown when Eddie nags Netta for his “good shirt” so he can “look black”. This can be interpreted by some viewers as Eddie being proud of his race. However, his wanting for whiter shirt so he can appear “blacker” can be more likely perceivable to him being excited and nervous to…

    2. With respect to the Land I was not Consulted in it, if I was to deliver my Sentiments evil disposed People might impute it to Motives very different from those which actuate me, it is true the Land belonged chiefly to those who have given it away; that the Words which were Spoken have been written with a Lasting Mark, the Superintendant marks every word after word as one would count Bullets so that no variation can happen, & therefore the words have been Spoken and the eternal marks traced I will not Say anything to contradict, but, on the Contrary Confirm the Cession which has been made. As a dynamic concept, the scope and nature of property has evolved from simply referring to a particular resource, to the legal relationship held with the resource.[4] Through this relationship, the owner of property generally has a right to control, access, enjoy, alienate, exclude and/or profit from their legally endorsed property. These benefits of property ownership therefore make up the ‘bundle of rights’ which is known to be property. Nevertheless, Gray argues that what makes property ‘property’ is the notion of excludability:…

Questions regarding one’s right to ownership of land and property has been an issue much discussed, debated and responsible in creating a stir of conflict in the attempt to find a conclusive answer on subject. In John Locke’s Second Treatise on Civil Government, published in 1690, Locke addresses the matter in question in the fifth chapter titled: ‘Of Property’. In his work, Locke builds an argument that displays how an individual obtains an ownership of property by means of labor. Locke is able to justify his position on the point at issue through the word of God and through simplistic scenarios he illustrates to his reader. Moving forward, in 1874, Chief Seattle conducted a powerful speech to Govenor Isaac Stevens and to the nation, a speech…

The only role and purpose of the acquired land is for it to be exclusively utilized for public uses, it cannot be utilized for means of producing tax revenues, additional jobs, and/or economic development benefits, giving an increased monetary advantage to the public agency. Kitchens (2014) explained that given the potential to expand and abuse eminent domain, it is of extreme importance to understand the refusing decision of the private owner, in instance waiting for the role of courts, and the outcomes of individuals taken to court. If a private owner had over a thousand dollars in holdouts then such proprietor was more likely to do for every thousand dollars debt. In other words, when someone has a considerable amount of the debt, the owner would preferably go to court and let the judge decide as to how much he/she is entitled to for the value of the owned land, instead of simply accepting the compensation that is being offered. Another fact in holding the selling of the property is related as to how many years the property owner has lived on the requiring land. The use of eminent domain for development and growth is significantly linked to controversies and complicated debates on economic development. One case where the taking of someone’s land turned into an issue of economic development was…
