Final Project: Leonardo Da Vinci
For my final project I felt a drawing would be best, for I am not much of a painter, a carver, or a photographer. In fact as far as artistic abilities I am really only good at drawing, so it was not hard to decide what I would do. I thought I would have trouble choosing a drawing at first, for many artists we studied were painters, but then I remembered Leonardo Da Vinci was a man of many talents, and one of those talents was drawing. So I decided to replicate a drawing he had intended to become a sculpture of a horse, but was unfortunately never built in his lifetime. I used simple materials to recreate the drawing, using just a regular pencil, some thick sketching paper, and lots of time and patience. Leonardo Da Vinci was adept at many

The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the composition of a simulated pharmaceutical preparation Panacetin, a proposed type of pain-killer. Panacetin is typically made up of sucrose, aspirin, and acetaminophen, but the third component in this experiment is unknown. The unknown component is suspected to be a chemical relative of acetaminophen, either acetanilide or phenacetin. Using techniques such as extraction, evaporation, and filtration, the three components will be isolated based on their solubilities and acid-base properties. The percent composition of Panacetin will also be deduced based on the masses of the three dried components; this is done to verify the composition attained is consistent with those listed on the preparations label. As a result of this investigation, my teammates and I allowed the Panacetin to undergo gravity filtration and separation techniques in order to identify whether there are any discrepancies in the components of the Panacetin. Furthermore, recrystallization and purification methods were used to determine if the unknown substance were similar in properties to either of the suspected unknown substances by comparing factors such as melting points to the chemical properties of phenactin and acetanilide. The results were as expected, based on the molecular weights and ratios of each separated chemicals, as well as the boiling point of the unknown it was determined that these ranges were close enough to indicate that the label is reasonably accurate in its composition. To add on however the identity of the unknown component differed from what the label indicated. In the end, the percentage composition attained based on our observations and yield confirmed that indeed the chemical composition of Panacetin were as indicated on the preparations label. The identity of the unknown component however suggested that the preparation did not contain acetaminophen as indicated, but instead was consistent with the chemical properties…

While although Pope Leo X eventually cancelled the San Lorenzo project, Michelangelo’s labors are the labors of countless others who risked life and limb to get the marble out of the ground and transport it across land and water is truly worth noting. We rightly marvel at the great works of architecture from the pre-industrial world. We extol their design, their ingenuity in construction, and their durability. Perhaps we ought to marvel more that they even got any stone to the…

The original artwork of the Mona Lisa was painted on a wood known as poplar wood. The Mona Lisa is an admirable work of art, due to every detail being exemplified within the painting itself. The face represents a sense of modeling while also appearing to be realistic. Leonardo da Vinci worked on this painting, along with many others, by being patient and creative: he first applied a few layers of coating onto a wooden panel, then he began drawing his central theme right onto his work of art because he then began drawing it in oil, applying turpentine which happened to not be as strong, and allowed him to draw on countless coatings of translucent color, better known for the term glaze, and to ceaselessly redesign the face. The transparent color increases the effects on the face with the way the shaded area is distinctively opposite to the area of the face that happens to contain light. The reason that this method of painting is applied on artworks is so that it can allow the ideal replica of a person’s skin, because of delicate treatment of how a person is supposed to look like transmitted into some sort of shaded entity, which allowed Leonardo to content his fixation with authenticity.…

China's treasure ships were part of a fleet that was larger than any in history. Zhu Di, leader and prince of the Ming dynasty, wanted the fleet of 317 wooden treasure ships all over 400 feet long. The prince wanted nothing but the best. The silk sails were a traditional red. The ships were used to carry cargo for trade. What amazes me is the boldness of the ships. Red silk sails and painted dragons and phoenixes sounds pretty impressive and coupled with the fact that they were so massive is just astounding. The work these people had to put in day after day makes me love my job. It also makes me realize what kind of people it took to do such work. The mental capacity to and plan out design and construct it perfectly. I think it really shows what a person is capable of. I was not bothered by their pride when they described their ships. They deserved to take pride in their work it is human nature to make it bigger and better…

“What spirit is so empty and blind, that it cannot recognize that the foot is more noble than the shoe, and skin more beautiful than the garment with which it is clothed” (Michelangelo). Michelangelo was one of the great artist who created great art during the Renaissance period. One of his most popular paintings is the Ceiling from the Sistine Chapel with the Creation of Adam being the main focal point. Art in the Renaissance period was more focused on the aspects of realism, humanism, and the prospective of what was created. Leonardo da Vinci was perhaps the most interesting artist of the Renaissance period; with that, he still holds presumably the most idealized painting in the world today, priced upwards of $1 Billion the Mona Lisa. Both…

Throughout his life, Leonardo Da Vinci embodied the expectations of an exemplary Renaissance man, due to his knowledge in many studies. A model Renaissance man was well educated, and “had learned enough to understand good literature, painting, and music” (Wallbank). Da Vinci clearly manifests the qualities of a Renaissance man because he was an excellent artist and studied a diverse array of subjects. He was well studied and it is shown within the 5,000 pages worth of journals, written on his findings. Da Vinci explored a wide variety of sciences, mostly pertaining to nature and humans. It was inferred that Leonardo Da Vinci studied motion, sound, water, plants, meteorology, air, fire, earth and water. His many studies contributes to his image…

Unequivocally the man who brought to life the Mona Lisa and designed the first scissors is bound to be a successful man; however his love and dedication to his various types of works is what made Leonardo Da Vinci a true Renaissance man. At the remarkably young age of fourteen Leonardo Da Vinci began to apprentice with a man named Andrea Del Verrocchio. “Not like that!” My sister Hana used to yell at me every time I paused the video tape of a cartoon show. I would stand over the TV screen with my paper on the screen and pencil in my hand, copying my favorite characters. “I told you to draw, not to copy” she would add. “I want it to be perfect!” was my reply. At a very young age, I developed a passion for drawing. My sister used to challenge me to draw some of our favorite cartoon characters. From these humble beginnings I started to develop into a skilled painter. When my father recognized my talent, he bought me several drawing books. Although I have always enjoyed creating different types of art, portraits (drawing a person’s facial features), captured my interest the most. Portraits require…

Da Vinci a Man of Math

Ask any given person who the most famous artist during the Renaissance was and the result would be nearly unanimous in the answer of “Leonardo Da Vinci”. But why is that? Yes, there is the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper to his name, but his legacy has extended beyond the world of paint and into other modern popular realms: of best-selling books (The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown) and even world renowned video games (Assassin’s Creed II). For each reproduction of his character, the modern world seems to want more of Leonardo. His ability to wield a paintbrush is undeniable, but other artists from this time could arguably be his equal, or perhaps even better in skill; so the question remains: why is it that these artists are not regenerated in such a way for each new generation to enjoy? Our interest in Leonardo stems from the wide range of his talents; while his art is known around the globe, his notebooks and inventions are possibly just as famous. In fact, with the most recent explorations of Leonardo’s history, it is the scientific mind that is more subject to dissection. Nearly five hundred years later and it seems that the fascination with the man’s complex brain has remained the same in the minds of the public. Simply put, Leonardo Da Vinci was a genius extending eras, trends, and cultural change; people were amazed by his ability during his time and people continue to flock to see his work from all over the world today. There is more to his art than just symbolism and color which attracts viewers, and I believe that his knowledge that extends into the math and scientific world heavily contributes to this. Da Vinci was indeed an excellent painter, but it was his use of science which made his art untouchable in quality by attempts from his peers.…

There have been some challenges with drawing. For one, I got what seems to be a pretty late start, only starting to really draw my freshman year of high school, and while that may seem young to some, it seems like usually, people start to draw or to make comics when they are still in middle school. So when I did draw, it always seemed like my drawings were “falling behind” the drawings other artists of my own age group had created. After I had finished drawing something, I was always so proud of it… up until I visited the internet and saw all of the drawings that were so much better.…

Leonardo da Vinci was one of the leading artists in the 16th century. One of his most famous works known as the Mona Lisa, was created in a time referred to as the High Renaissance. At this time education was valued, and art was advancing with mathematical, and liberal techniques that incorporated reality with the complementary, or "ideal"(pg.633). Another leading artist of Florence was Raphael, who found himself doing newlywed portraits of Agnolo Doni and Maddalena Strozzi.…
